A few things might help improve the photo for next time: looks like this was taken in the middle of the day, for white birds this causes them to be easily overexposed as on the head here, try earlier or later in the day; your horizon (the beach) is not straight, always keep horizons straight; putting the bird above or below the horizon helps with a clean background.
