Cheltenham Badlands

LenMarriott

Following in the steps of Greg McCracken and Igor L, I tried my hand at capturing the beauty of this unusual landscape. Tripod & cable release. Best, LM.

This is my favourite of the two, because of the more thrilling color palette. The other shot would be also nice in B&W but this must be in color. I wish there was a bit more DOF in the LL. A very interesting diagonal composition - I thought about a slight sacrifice at the top to have the lines in the UL and UR going to the corner.

Carsten, Good to have your input. No excuse, I know, but I may have rushed things a bit when I took this. The sun was setting and the shadows were creeping up at a rapid rate. Taken with my 135mm lens using f16 and hyperfocal focusing technique if I remember correctly. Perhaps I should have used f22 and taken my lumps with the increase in defraction. Tough call. Never having done any tests in this area it's hard for me to say which, the loss of sharpness due to defraction, or that lost through using f16, would result in lower overall quality. Something I'll test next time out. Good thing the LL corner is darker than the rest. Your crop does minimize the distraction of the bright area upper left. Sometimes, like here, a very minor crop can make a major improvement. Thanks for pointing that out. Best, LM.

The textures are certainly picked by a pair of experienced eyes and the LargerView provided more entertainment for my eyes. I, particularly, like the upper righ-hand quadrant where the patterns are more soothing and interesting to the eyes.

Noticed how many times I used the word eyes? Well, this image is all about visuals!

Did u get to wonder around to explore further in this area when you were there?

Arthur, Yah, nothing like a screen filling image to emphasize the details (& also expose the flaws) The light was rapidly fading & I did well to get what you see here. I didn't really get to explore the whole area as, for 2 hrs at least, it was all I could do to work over the 100 x 200 yard area depicted here and even at that I didn't cover all the angles. I need at least one more trip back. Stay tuned. If you Google "Cheltenham Badlands" you'll probably find out all you want to know about this area. Thanks for your interest. Best, LM.

The last exposure of the day. Appeal was not only the shapes and

textures but the colours too. Could be converted to B&W but some of

the flavour of the place would then be lost. Your views\comments

will be gratefully received. Best, LM.

Wonderful image - I see slight magenta bias in the lower third which could be changed (if you so desire) selectively by reducing the blue.

Nice to get your input. I guess, with PS, there's no limit to how one could change the look of this one. I went back to work for a few minutes, cut back on the blue (added yellow) and came up with this result. The original slide had the magenta bias you pointed out & I originally just wrote it off as being the result of using Velvia 100F. See how this one compares. Best, LM.
