pmj 6 Posted March 20, 2006 This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum. Before writing a contribution to this thread, please consider our reason for having this forum. We have this forum because future visitors might be interested in learning more about the pictures. They browsed the gallery, found a few striking images and want to know things like why is it a good picture, why does it work? Or, indeed, why doesn't it work, or how could it be improved? So, when contributing to this thread, please keep the above in mind. Address the strengths, the shortcomings of the image. It's not good enough to like it, you should spend some time trying to put into words why that is the case. Equally so if you don't like it, or if you can't quite make up your mind.Let's make sure this forum is a wonderful learning resource for future photographers!Thank you and enjoy! Link to comment
greg s 4 Posted March 20, 2006 I like the form, but as for tonality it's a bit washed out for my tastes. Link to comment
bgy 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Love it. Is the bes POW in the las months. It looks as if it mas made with pencil. Love the soft light and the color. Great work, congratulations Link to comment
labtails 0 Posted March 20, 2006 > Before making any strong judgement on this photograph I would like to know what the photographer was thinkin & whether she accomplished what she was going for. This shot is very intriguing. The lines of the body are beautiful. The model appears to be materializing out of the background. Sure there could be more contrast, but as is I think it is a wonderful & thoughtful photograph. Link to comment
aphanius 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Nice election, elves, soft tones and smart composition. Is this a high key or a charcoal rendition? Link to comment
AJHingel 127 Posted March 20, 2006 If this was the "Photographer" of the Week Forum then for everyone should go to Marketa's portfolio and you will see that she is much better than this photo of the week seems to indicate. She is a photographer of greatest talents using warm sensual colours and great imagination. One of the best I have seen on Photonet. But, this is in fact the "Photograph of the week" forum so this particular photo is one of a series of very cold, bleak and furthermore, in my view, the least succeeded of the series. I'm not at all convinced of the posture of the model which is neither, in my eye, aesthetic or natural nor pleasant to look at (does it need to be ?). My main problem of this specific photo is more of technical order. What is in fact happening at the border areas of the hair and the back ? Obviously less contrast in these zones of the background would be able to make the turbulences disappear. Please go and admirer Marketas's portfolio. Anders Link to comment
doug bowles 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Use of high key / sepia treatment to good effect. My only disappointment is the fact the high-key treatment has obscured the definition in the lines where her left arm comes down her back and over her buttock. All the lines there kind of get lost in the glare. Otherwise very nice form and composition. Congratuations. Link to comment
pampolin 1 Posted March 20, 2006 Well, as art this is nice, but picture? I really don?t see it like a photography, i see it as painting or digital art, less photography. I?m not against photoshop effects, but sometime, as in this picture, photoshop is bigger than pure photography. Nice image, but not nice photography. . Link to comment
mona_chrome 0 Posted March 20, 2006 I am somewhat surprised that the issue of whether this is photography or not has come up. Although I am sure this was done in photoshop or similar, this technique has been done in the darkroom for many years before we knew of digital and involves no manipulation other than the decision on how to print it. There is nothing non- photographic about this. As to the photo, I do like it a lot. For me, a form study does not need to look natural, but should be, as this one is, elegant. The hair muss might be fighting the nice lines created a bit too much, but it is still nice overall. I think it is a difficult skill to create these high key photos in photoshop or in the darkroom successfully. What I do wonder here is, again, how much of the highlight tone has been lost in the upload and would a print have better (softer) transitions and whites than what we see here--holding some of the lines between skin and skin and skin and background a bit better. For me this is my favorite in this folder, as it lacks some of the artiface of the others and is pure form. Overall, a nice photograph and a nice portfolio. Link to comment
daviddbfotoart 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Beautiful tones, but the shadows show that the lighting was not always as it seemed, and that a lot of post production has taken place. This could be due to an initial mistake in the exposure, or the shot was always going to end up high key. All in all, this is a beautiful, soft photo, erotic yet not ribald, and very feminine. billfoster 0 Posted March 20, 2006 A few things strike me about this .... First, I am often struck here on PN by how much context affects how I view a picture. This is a much different picture viewed in context of its folder then viewed alone. Second, Marketa is a great stylist and set arranger. A lot of the strength of her photography seems to be in how well she costumes and arranges her subjects (which is in no way meant to say she doesn't have technical skill; she obviously has an abundance). And yet, this shot - one of her strongest IMO - plays away from her strengths and is much simpler and more elegant than her other work. Finally, why does someone always have to have to bring up the "this isn't a photgraph argument" just so the rest of us can say Ansel Adams abused his negatives too? Art is art. It's an individual thing and we can decide if we like it or not and if we think its good or not, but we can't define it; that's where each artist has to draw their own line (pun intended). So, love the simple pose - pure form as Mona noted. Love the drawing effect, which seems much more subtle and natural here then in the rest of the folder. In fact, I didn't even notice it at first. Love the high key look. The only subtle complaint I have is that loss of detail where the arm meets the back (which I didn't notice at first but now that it's been pointed out I can't stop staring at). Congrats on a well-deserved POW and on making a really great photograph. Link to comment
ken_thalheimer 3,739 Posted March 20, 2006 There's a beautiful grace to the form in this right down to her hands. Could there be more contrast? Sure, but I like it as is. The front is more separated in contrast than her back giving somewhat of an illusion she's emerging from the background as someone has mentioned Link to comment
meli d 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Just wanted to comment on "the posture of the model which is neither, in my eye, aesthetic or natural nor pleasant to look at (does it need to be ?)", and I draw that comment not to be argumentative in the least, but just to accentuate that the posture is what I appreciate most in the photo, as a gentle yoga pose, a very natural one with the connection of hands and feet, and this model has it, with nice energy. I look forward to looking through the portfolio. Link to comment
