colin carron 58,916 Posted March 5, 2006 Not sure if this works but I was intrigued by the gate with no fence either side, and the puddle, and the roads and paths all going off in different directions. All comments welcome! Link to comment
pjmeade 12 Posted March 5, 2006 Hello Colin, this works for me. Bucolic England with a spring sky. Best wishes. Peter Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 6, 2006 Very good composition, good colours and tones and textures.Might work better with a litle crop on the left, but I am not sure and its just great as it is. Link to comment
alexandra rauh 0 Posted March 6, 2006 There You are Colin. I am sure of this picture, it has strength and beauty. How the curves of the road and puddle form a composition. The far out look and the lively sky.The tree against the sky and the light ( Sorry, they did not take my 7) Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted March 6, 2006 Colin, I like the warm colors of earth and the sky blue reflection in the water, as a connecting ellement between the two. Another possibility that I see and I think would enhance the composition is if you were taken a step or two to the left so the fence will start from the very corner of the lower Rhs, and will be a leading ellement into the landscape.Do I make sense to you?... colin carron 58,916 Posted March 6, 2006 Thanks everyone! Pnina, yes I see what you mean. The reason I took the shot from there is to emphasise the way the fence ends. But your idea would have emphasised the gate entrance more. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 6, 2006 Seriously impressed by the detail in this, what settings and focal length was this taken at Col? Link to comment
david robinson 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Colin good to see some new work from you. The weather improved over there has it? Lovely lighting here. I wonder about the lens choice here. I think the fence and puddle work well. The road, however, seems to be more of an intrusion and works against the directional flow. I particularly note the beauty of the clouds behind the fence. I think I may have preferred a less wide view here showing more of these clouds. Link to comment
hansio 0 Posted March 6, 2006 Colin, you did it again. Of all those places a person can only dream of, you make the most exquisit image I can imagine. Just one remark: They are almost Dutch skies, huh? But then again, it might be in the neigbourhood of Sallafield? Great job. Keep going. Link to comment
photos of hans koot 0 Posted March 6, 2006 yes.. very dutch :-)) and incrdible photo, great work, dont change a bit. Link to comment
kleintje 0 Posted March 7, 2006 Pnina beat me to it... Though I like the idea behind this photo and the elements you used to compose it, the road on the left draws my eyes away rather than into the image (like the road on the right does). Somehow I keep coming back to that road on the left, so I agree with Pnina about the few steps to the left. Besides this, I like very much the other elements composing this image and the way they relate to each other. Link to comment
alberto.conde 0 Posted March 7, 2006 What a masterful landscape, dear Colin. A real inspiration for the modest amateurs from a master artist Link to comment
paula grenside 0 Posted March 7, 2006 In this kind of shots, you paint with the camera, Colin: Constable's first period comes to mind. Well composed and wonderful colors. I like it the way you took it. Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted March 7, 2006 Thanks everyone! Hi Ben - the focal length was 10mm and the aperture f/4, shutter speed 1/1000. In retrospect a smaller aperture would have been better. David, Ilse, thanks. The road was included because I like all the lines going off in different directions but I can see it won't be everyone's taste. Hans, Hans, Alberto and Paula, thank you all so much for commenting. I am a great admirer of Dutch landscape painting (and marine painting and still life, and Rembrandt is one of my heros!). The landscape of this part of England is quite similar to Holland and indeed much of it was drained by Dutch engineers in the 17th century. Paula, you are also right about Constable who lived and worked only a few miles from where this shot was taken. Link to comment
cherlyn 1 Posted March 7, 2006 Sure works with the different elements going in different directions. Interesting mixture with good clean colours. Link to comment
henrimanguy 0 Posted March 7, 2006 I think it works very well. There is an excellent distribution of the lines, masses, colours. As numerous of your photos, this one makes me think to Constable, a painter for which I have a particular feeling with his love of familiar country landscapes.Regards, HenriP. S. I see that I am not the only one to think to Constable, and it is interesting to learn that he was living and painting in the same area. Link to comment
sondra kick 0 Posted March 7, 2006 This works well for me. I also like Pnina'a idea about the corner of the fence. Great sky too. Link to comment
sef1664877429 0 Posted March 7, 2006 I like the idea of the road, I've done simmilar things myself. I like the different lines, and their directions. The gate leads straight to the tree, the other one takes us into the field. The road, and to a certain extent the puddle, produce curved lines, to contrast with the straight ones. There is something not quite working, but I can't honestly put my finger on it. The directional energies(sounds like I'm starting to speak in laylines!) are being sapped somehow. Maybe needs more road, rather than less, maybe the sheer size of the water, maybe just Pnina's suggestion, can't say. Or Druids... mmm. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 8, 2006 Colin, You must have one hell of a copy of the 10-22 , my photos are nowhere near as crisp even at f8, and I'm using a weighted down tripod, MLU and shutter release. I think this is just fine at f4. Link to comment
matt_c2 0 Posted March 8, 2006 Beautiful Colin. The fence and gate are positioned perfectly in the frame for me. Perfect exposure. Very well done. Matt Link to comment
home page1 0 Posted March 10, 2006 Wonderful sky, lighting, and perspective. I am an admirer of how you use that 10-22mm lens. Really nice work. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted March 11, 2006 I like your idea with the diverging lines, and I think you didnt touch the left side intentionally. The roads curve goes together with the fence lines, and the sky... I think you were attracted by the lines of the cloudscape, too. A nice extra is the tree as counterpart for the cumulus cloud. Why not a B&W to underline all these elements, I dont think you really need color here. CheersCarsten Link to comment
