This one is really great. I wonder how it can happen that the traces end at the umbrella. The person must have walked backwards :) It feels like still life, calm and silent.

Hahahahahahahahahaha !! This is truly fantastic...! :-) Somebody went to this umbrella and never returned to life after this ! Proof of it: no foot prints returning from that umbrella. So that's it, the guy is still there, under this umbrella... Poor fella ! :-))

Well done Salih. The simplicity of the image, colour and lines are striking and powerfull. Initially I thought that the absence of more, or any contrast for that matter, between lighter and darker values would be a problem. But it's not. It actually enhances the image. Less is more in this case.

 

Which brings me to the obvious question, with which I suppose everyone will struggle this week: "Where is the owner of the umbrella?"

 

Looking at the little indents top left, my best guess is that little elves carried him into their world.

I am so glad that this photo is chosen the POW :) about the photo: I wanted to take pictures from my balcony on the 6th floor. it was very hard to get the white balance right which made me quite exited.

I am always attracted to abstract, abstracting from life has a lot of meaning. I do not want to be disturbed by the details which I left out of the photo so I prefer abstract. less is more is my motto. I gives me a chance to get away from the polluted city life.

Not yet Xmas, and still snowy... Agree with Marc on humour side. Just some regret about the 'road' set just in the middle, as if it was a flag... beside no doubt that's a great photo. Congrats for POW

Wow, I love the ones that make you think, that's 'my cup of tea'. White on white and aesthetically pleasing to the eye to boot- I'd say great all around! The slight magenta in the border throws it off a dash; I'd keep it neutral, otherwise perfect. Congrats.

I love the humor, the simplicity and the white on white. Although I cannot see a good way to crop the image, I have a small (very small) objection to the composition being centered horizontally as it is. In viewing other pictures on your portfolio, I see a dozen or more of tracks in snow. Nicely "seen" and you give me incentive to look more closely when I'm out and about. Congratulations on being the chosen one.

You all got it wrong, its a moonshot and the guy just jumped out of the picture given the low gravity.

Thought provoking and humorous. The simplicity does it for me. As for the composition, breaking the "rules" occaisionally works, as it does in this image. Nice work.

Sorry, but in general my interest in "mystery" photos like this have been decreasing with the increasing use of photoshop. Furthmore, there is such an easy non-photoshop solution to this one that it doesn't really present that much of a mystery: one medium-large step to the left and then place the umbrella over the last of the very small steps. As a non-conceptual, artistic image it has some interest (the textures and the shades of white) but the subjects and composition are not especially memorable to me.

I join Marc G. The foot prints toward the umbrella and not back is the funniest in that very nice image!The details of white on white are well accentuated. Well exposed and composed, as well as observed.

I suspect this is set up, rather than observed. Having visited Salih's folder, it was nice to see an idea explored using different scenes and different shooting angles.

 

If I was going to try to pull this off, I think I'd take two shots on a tripod - one "before" shot with just the sidewalk, and one "after" shot with umbrella and footprints. Use the pristine shot as a background layer and erase the exit footprints.

That's clearly a valid possibility using Photoshop, Carl. But I'd have tried differently in this case, and I suspect salih may have used less PS than you suggest.

 

The other way to do this is quite simple:

 

1) Forget an umbrella on the alley in your garden at night.

 

2) Next morning, you wake up & see a bit of snow on it. You decide to take your umbrella.

 

3) You go there, and when you arrive at the umbrella, you simply jump out of the picture - finally deciding to leave your umbrella where it was. (The footprints near the umbrella seem to confirm that the photographer jumped out in the direction of the bottom of the pix. (?)...)

 

4) You go back to your balcony and shoot exactly this POW. If necessary, and if your jump was a little short, you just clone off the foot prints near the picture's edge, which would otherwise indicate that you jumped.

 

Please note that the size of the "pavement" is just more or less the size of the umbrella. A lot of people can do a jump of about a meter. Even I could manage that...:-)

The plant foot (that's a soccer term) would leave telltale impressions.

 

Cloning a uniform texture also leaves telltale smudges.

Well, if I understand well what you mean by Plant foot, then I think I can see the marks.

 

As for the smudge marks, you are clearly wrong: not if you know how to do a proper cloning - i.e. with the appropriate brush in the first place. Many examples available if you wish. Regards.

i think you are at the place that you deserve dear guler...this photo reflects your style very good...i like the shadows of little snow hills in photo and footprints also...Congratulations again...

in the beginning I took different shots of the same theme. for me the most interesting

detail in this particular photo was the bird tracks on the left corner. I wish I could have

thought there would be birds there and put some seeds under the umbrella...

couldn't have taken shots with a tripod cause I ws on the 6th floor and I had to really hang

down from the balcony. in addition to all this it was very dark where the umbrella was

standing.

did not erase the footprints for sentimental reasons, liked them on the same frame with

bird tracks...
