Somewhere Between Sunset and Moonrise

newfocus

12 minute exposure at f/5.6, ISO 100 an hour and a half after sunset when there was just a tiny glow left in the sky behind the camera to light the foreground. The streaks in the sky are clouds blown by a strong North wind.

simply beautiful john. the color gradation in the sky is perfect - excellent job at keeping the star trails visible throughout as well as getting a bright, crisp horizon. perfect exposure. the axis of the star trails is perfectly positioned slightly off-center and i love the wide-angle look. an all round top-class image - well done! i almost forgot, the cloud streaks are great as well.

John, this is an amazing shot. It's remarkable how sharp the foreground elements are considering the long exposure time. What camera and lens did you use on this shot?

Thanks for the comments everyone. Just to answer Will's question, it was taken with a Canon 5D and the 17mm end of the 17-40mm f/4.

This photo achieves a good, classic balance of composition: The subject is weel centrally focused in relation to its environment, and add attention to the dramatic and grat light of the sky. Congratulations

This makes me want to go out and try this...amazing for sure...shooting in low light is very tough...this is a testament to what can be achieved when done right.

John: Apart from your mastery over the long exposure, the composition was really appropriate here. There are so many elements here to see and appreciate - thanks for the inspiration

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the comments. The streaks are from a few wisps of cloud, being blown down from the north during the exposure.

John.

I admire your technical ability here, John, the balance between sky and foreground is very well made and the light streaks in the sky make a dramatic addition.
