Leo, I think this is an interesting composition on in many ways, and I've come back to it several times. However, one element that continues to slightly bother me, is the lack of focus on the foreground towel/blanket.

I keep asking myself "why" and in truth I'm not sure. It may have to do with that fact that the image is so iconic that I am drawn to it or perhaps it's the simple fact that it happens to be large and commands attention. I don't know but I do wish it were sharper.

Anyway, just a thought.

Regards,

Stephen

Stephen: thanks for your interesting comment.

The reason why the towel is not in focus is I fumbled with focusing. But what you say about the lack of focus being somewhat attractive must be true. I realized, upon scanning the negative, that it kind of set apart the 'icon' and gave it some sort of ethereal meaning, in contrast to the harsh concrete reality of what surrounds it. This might have not been my intention upon taking the picture, but it turned out to be attractive nonetheless. Would it be more powerful were it sharp? I have no idea. Maybe this image turned out to be strong because it shows how powerful the Marilyn icon is: you can turn it upside down and get it blurred and it still stands.

Cheers!
