An almost sureal image. Great lighting and a full range of tonal values. I love shots like this with the receeding vanishing point. Good work!

I love the lines and the repeating pattern, but I think you need some maximum black in here somewhere. The deepest shadow areas are still a bit too light for me, but the light areas are right on the spot. You have good detail in the wood, which really adds feeling and texture to the image. Very nice control of lighting as well; there is good detail all the way down the image to the farthest point.

The only other thing that catches my eye is that the image seems weighted on the right a bit more than on the left, but I can see that there are few options for moving right without losing the depth. I think you did a great job working with a tough subject.

Wonderful abstract. Good work. Randy's comments are insightful. I too feel the tonality of the image could be tweaked a bit -- this is part of what would make a great image out of a good one. As I said in commenting on one of your other photos, this is something I'm trying to learn myself.

Again, I disagree that the tonal range needs to be tweaked: the light source was very even and I suspect that this is a very long exposure with a very tight aperture - which would account for the degree of detail in what is obviously a dark space under a roof. Understanding this, I don't think you should change anything about the tonal range but appreciate it for its technical expertise. As for the framing, I like the offset on the outer edges of the frame: this offset is what creates the geometric dynamic with the vanishing point in the lower center of the image. This vanishing point is also dynamic against the extra braces (three are visible) thrusting up from the right against the left side of the roof. It's a complex image very well executed: change nothing!

Thank you again for your comments. This has to be one of my favourites from Rothenburg.

I could agree with Randall and Chris about getting some darker tones, as I tend to like images with more contrast. On the other hand, I don't know that I would like it as such, as Rich has noted. I like the subtlety of the tones and how they work with the repeating lines to a vanishing point, and that you can still see the very end, whereas if I increased the tonal range, I fear would be lost. As for the framing, I didn't feel I had much choice, as I wanted to see the end in sight. For me the balance is even although I can see how it might feel weighted on the right. As for the exposure time, I don't think it was really all that long. (I'll have to check the metadata and come on this). It was a very sunny day and this was shot under the roof of the town wall, everything was either wood or stone which was light and reflective. I will get back to this and post the details soon and even play with the tones in PS, just for the sake of playing with my pictures. :)
