waltrude_2000 0 Posted January 3, 2006 I hope you sneeze in the direction of those who anonymously rated you low. It is an original and funny picture ( makes me happy looking at). A Swedish artist whos name I cant remember at the moment has painted some similair. One with only one dot, called PLING ( sounding like a bell ) and another one with more called PLINGELING.Keep steaming ! Walter Link to comment
john mackay 0 Posted January 3, 2006 I look at this and I see the triumph of colour over black and white and contemporary amateur photography's fixation with over-saturated colours and creating better than Real. An extension of this interpretation is that the photo asks What is photography?. I could go on but I haven't had my medication :))This is highly conceptual and is much more powerful than the technically perfect yet visually banal images that compete for our attention on a daily basis. It's ambiguity invites reflection, engages the mind and in the process transcends the photo itself. That being said people's reaction i.e. apparent low ratings are legitimate responses. I can appreciate that it is sufficently abstract enough to frustrate decoding in some and frustration can result in disconnection from the image rather than connection.Ultimately, for me this represents the failure of the artist to communicate. Not in the art piece itself but in the lack of interpretive guide or information -- to get people started. Ive seen this occur more than once where there is insufficient keys to indicate that the art is a conceptual piece. In the abscence of a friendly and suitable informed curator, people are left to their own devices and instead of introducing people to a new way of looking at things the artist can inadvertantly alienate potential converts.I think we really need a Conceptual Photography categoryP.S. I haven't rated it, not because I don't think it's good I think it is magnificent. However, I sincerely think that a numeric rating system is seriously flawed and redundant when considering this type of work.Bravo...John Link to comment
