gilbert_fortier 0 Posted November 12, 2005 I like this kind of abstract picture, and this one in particular because beside the touch of rust, the rest is blue, and blue again...I like the texture, the contrast between the round shape and the square frame, and the shadow adds a lot too! I would like to see what this picture would look like taken later in the day, with a warm yellowish light! The only one thing I would try is to crop just a little on the right. Even if I usually try to keep my shots "full frame", I think that cropping a little here would help, leaving less "empty" space on the right side. Hope you'll get lots of good comments!! pjmeade 12 Posted November 12, 2005 Hello Tom, I have just had a look at your portfolio, there is some very nice work there. I like this one, it's nicely proportioned, somple and well observed. Regards. Pete Link to comment
gilbert_fortier 0 Posted November 12, 2005 Thanks for the good comments about my picture of the dalmatian! To be honest, I was concerned about that DOF thing... Working with a focal around 35-45mm, it's hard to get a very shallow DOF under that much light... I opened to f4,5, the "wider opened" I could get (2,8 was too much...I was exceeding 1/2000 with a polarizer on at 100Iso...)... And I needed to be quick, cause I got that shot done "on the fly"...But you're right, it's kind of "in between"... I was concerned too that the clothes for sale in the close background would bother some people, but nobody seemed to notice a problem there! I'll take a free tour in your folders! See you! PS. By the way, I don't understand the "new" ratings we get... I've been absent from PN for a few months, and since I'm back, I notice that the ratings are sometimes brutal... To me, a "3" is for a really ordinary, even bad shot... And someone gave you a 3 for your picture... How come? Anyway, I try to take more consideration to comments than ratings... Your average is around "4"? That means "average/fair"...I totally disagree but...anyway... Link to comment
tom t 0 Posted November 12, 2005 Urgh... the ratings.... Check the Site Feedback page - it's pretty bad these days ... Anyhow - why my average is about 4 - I do rate a lot of sub-standard shots, and I always leave a comment why the rate is low. I do not believe that ignoring bad shots actually helps ppl, so, yes, I rate quite a few 2/2s and then explain why. Tom Link to comment
gilbert_fortier 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Uh... I think I got misunderstood here and I'm sorry because re-reading my comment afterwards, I realized that it could have had 2 different meanings, and the "other" one (the way you received it) was at the opposite of what I wanted to say... I meant that I didn't agree about the fact that people gave your picture only "average" ratings (around "4"), that you deserved more... You see why I felt bad??? I think it's just disappointing sometimes... I hope it's clearer now!!! Link to comment
mmmee 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Hi Tom Love the simplicity of the blue and the composition. I might crop it a bit from the right, maybe square it up. The shadow is perfect. The ratings are of no consequence. What we get from trying to do an intelligent critique and having others critique our photos is the only really meaningful thing. The ratings are a distraction, at best. A detraction and damnation at worst. Link to comment
tom t 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Hey M.M, long time no see or hear! Thx for the comment. I agree on the ratings... unfortunately... Take care, Tom Link to comment
dominiquedodge 0 Posted January 6, 2006 I wonder what was on the left of the ring, for that's the way my eye travels (draw in by the shadow and the dribbles of paint). Something is not working for me in this shot, and that's the only thing I can find ... I'm not sure if this comment makes sense, but I thought I'd write it instead of nothing. Very blue, indeed! susan stone 0 Posted January 26, 2006 Howdy Tom, Ben S. has inspired me to spend some time taking a peek and commenting on more images here on PN, this one really got my eye in the TRP. I really appreciate lots of color, good graphic detail and an uncluttered composition and this image really delivers. Love all that blue! Link to comment
jnicholson 0 Posted January 27, 2006 Hi Tom, this is the type of shot I wish I'd see but rarely do. It's the apparent simplicity of this shot that makes it so eye catching. Beyond that, two things make this shot, for me: First, the shadow which is a wonderful sort of geometric contribution to the picture. Second is the small amount of rust that we can see. It does a great job of suggesting what we might find underneath all that lovely blue. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted March 14, 2006 Lovely. This works perfectly. Great light, great color, fine composition. (I'd clone out that tiny white spot near the top.) Link to comment
