The pose, the clothes, the background, the masculine face all shaved and clean--how would this guy look sitting by a fire wearing animal skins and a full beard?

Probably ok as he is a bit of a mountain man. This is a real commercial shot for Auckland city. Sorry Nothing overly interesting other than these being work shots posted. I feel I should post shots if I also critique.

i like the blue tie with the background, but he's forcing the posed shot way too much. that counter is too low for him to be leaning on. all of his power shown through his suit is destroyed by his stance.

Understatement is key here. A relaxed presentation with out the fluff. The problem with photography today is the pied piper effect of going for art for art sake and by destroying images due to visual impact pressures. Commercial visual sense has been lost due to these pressures distorting the eyes ability to see and feel with emotion because the photographer is forced into believing if it is not artistic then it is crap. This is why fashion photography today has lost what it was ultimately about... Commerce. To provide images of people in clothes in circumstances that are obtainable to the normal viewer. To create a form of fantacy not to exclude the viewer but hopefully compel them to buy the obtainable fantacy believing they can be there. The self-conscious attempts to produce great photographs sometimes undermines it to be a great fashion photograph that sells. Right now because of this, there is a shift to classic approaches inspired by the old masters of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Shock is out along with heady attempts to baffle your viewer with masked artistic brilliance. The fashion houses know it and come to realize a change is needed in order to get back to what photography in the fashion sense was ultimately about. To increase sales. Anyway I know this photo is not a pizzaz photo nor is it meant to be. Nor is it worth any real discussion. But if that is what the client wants then I am only to happy to produce it. Cheers and good luck. I look forward to seeing your photo's when you post them on Phot.net. Cheers Randall
