The big chunk of rock along the right edge bothers me. Or... is it

just me?

It does catch the eye, but only a bit. If you were in a canoe, you could get a bit closer and make the shot without it, but I think it is pretty strong as it is. You have good tonal values and composition right now. I would consider the left part of the image more than the right. If you shot this square, you could really put the emphasis on the waterfall in the background and have even more sense of depth. Nice job as it is though.

Thank you sir for great constructive feedback. I love it but I don't get enough of it. I'll try cropping this square when I have a chance and I'll post it in my portfolio (or maybe for critique). Incidentally, there was no way to get closer without wading in, and with 14 more miles to hike with no spare shorts before dark I needed to stay dry-ish, and it got real deep real quick. The scenery is marvelous, but I don't understand why you made it black and white.

OK: Suffers from lack of a true focal point. (Smal) waterfall at center right not dominating enough for balance.. My eye is led away towards the rock at the right.

Andriy, the black and white was just an experimental whim. Glad you like the scenery (it's much better in person).

 

Edward, thank you! I see what you mean about that righthand rock, and as for focal point... it's something I need to work on. This was a very challenging subject to shoot without getting soaked (but it may be worth it to get a good shot as this really is an impressive little falls). The next time I'm in that area I'll have to try this shot again, keeping your advice in mind. Thank you very much indeed!
