The foreground shows new trees growing while the background trunks

are all dead as a result of bushfires a couple of years ago. Your

comments are most welcome.

Good shot, but for me the black tarp at the bottom of this shot attracts too much attention and takes away from the beauty of the shot. I like the fog amongst the tree trunks in the background.

Thanks Sherwin. It is a burnt trunk. It didn't occur to me at the time but I see exactly what you mean. There was plenty of opportunity to get a clearer shot - something to remember next time.

i love the mood you've created here as well as the contrast between the new and old, but i'd have to agree that the charred trunk across the bottom does command a bit too much of the eye's attention.

Perhaps from another angle so the ground does not tild.

Is this a new camera for you Jeff? Let me know what you think. Meanwhile from what I am seeing you are getting some excellent results here. I am less bothered about the fallen tree trunk. I like that there are these diagonal layers in the foreground that are contrasted with the vertical layers behind. This works for me...

Thanks for the feedback folks. David, I have had the 1D MKII for about a year now. I bought it for people shots, macro and the Zoo voluntary work that I do. It is a bit of a beast, particularly with an RRS L plate but absolutely unbeatable for the things that I use it for. It has seen weekly action photographing our first grandchild. My eyes are no longer up to manual focus for such active subjects.

 

The reason that it saw use on this occasion was that I really wanted to try out the Hasselblad digital back but wasn't keen on finding out how it performed in misty rain. I had no hesitation in using the Canon - use and wipe off without a second thought.

 

I'm glad that someone else is happy with the FG log. To me,it was about life and two stages of decay but I would try both ways next time.

Jeff, I think this is one of the best in this new series. No question about little 'dis-order' in the bottom. I did question whether we need this or not. I had a tendency to keep that. After reading your words, I agree with you more. Maybe we can try different shots and they might come with different results. Good lesson from this photo. Thanks for sharing.

I read the comment about the black tarp distracting and I disagree. I think it makes a nice, strong line that enhances the composition. Beautiful shot!

Knowing that the entire wood is charred dead and seeing the new generation replacing it created a deep emotional impact on me. Snow on the ground and the burnt trunk suggested the extremes that these 'kids' will experience in the endless future. This picture has a lot to tell...
