bob_keen1
The 1v has separate buttons for automatic exposure lock and flash exposure lock. If you're in difficult background vs. subject lighting situations, can I correctly assume both can be used together? I would like to point away from the subject to the background and engage AEL, then back to the subject and FEL. I know in aperture priority this is supposed to do that for you, but where the subject is large in the viewfinder, I worry the background won't be properly exposed. Another example, photographing someone inside a room in front of a window with a scenic view (daylight outside). Aperture priority or Program will usually overexpose the outside view. Please, any help would be truly appreciated. Bob Keen
scott_ferris
Hi Bob, The short answer is I don't know you would have to test it, the longer one is: Set the camera in manual for the background ( the camera is also metering and exposing to the background in Tv and Av modes) and over or under expose it to your hearts content then use the flash to expose the subject using flash compensation to over or under expose that to your hearts content. The 1V and the 550EX in single or multiple setups is so complicated you can get any effect you want relatively easily but it does take a bit of understanding as to what it is all doing and how its achieving it. Don't forget the two meter readings in the viewfinder are for ambient and flash and can be adjusted seperately. Forget P mode with flash it turns the 1V into a point and shoot. Take care, Scott. yakim_peled1
>> I would like to point away from the subject to the background and engage AEL Understood so far. >> then back to the subject and FEL This is the part that confuses me because you don't say afterwards that you change the position of the camera again. If that is so, there is no point in FEL. Happy shooting , Yakim.
eric merrill
<i>"I would like to point away from the subject to the background and engage AEL, then back to the subject and FEL."</i> <p> Seems like it's more complex relying on the camera's "auto" features than it would be to either determine the proper subject exposure, and use manual mode, or just use the wheel to dial in the right amount of exposure compensation as you go. When the camera's auto-settings make your life more difficult, stop using them. :) <p> --<br> Eric<br> <a href="http://canid.com/">http://canid.com/</a><br>
