david_h._hartman
May I respectfully recommend the Nikon N80.
lachaine
A beginner doesn't stay a beginner. If you want the greatest ease of using manual exposure and full, direct access to all the meters, focussing modes, exposure modes, ISO ratings, etc., the F80/N80 is best, if you can afford it (and it's really very cheap for the quality and abilities of this camera). david_h._hartman
Here is a clip from the late Galen and Barbara Rowells Mountain Light website

Nikon N80: A lightweight camera with virtually all of the important features that an advanced photographer could ever wantthis may be the best value in a 35mm SLR. Galen used the N80 extensively on treks, climbs, and trail runs, and a number of images made with it grace our gallery walls. --Galens Camera Bag

Best,

Dave. arnabdas
IMO The Canon 300v is quite a bit better than the F55. If I may also suggest, take Pierre and Dave's suggestions and go for an F80 --
wen_lin
I realise that whenever anyone ask for advise on F75/65/55, everyone suggests a F80. I wonder how is Nikon ever gonna sell any F75/65/55... But it will be great if they can make more F80 and make it cheaper.. My random rambling...
