larryadler
I currently have a Slik DX700 tripod and am looking for a betterquality tripod. I currently own a Pentax 67II & 645, and a Nikon F100camera. I'm thinking about a heavy duty carbon fiber. Anysuggestions on a tripod and head? mike_elek
I have a Manfrotto 440 carbon fiber mated with a 308RC ball head. I've been very pleased with it. It handles everything from 35mm to a Rolleiflex SL66 with ease.
gary_a._hill
I'm interested in the Cullmanns, although I have never actually tried one. The Cullmanns have quick release leg adjustments. One thing I discovered about my TiltAll is that the three-section legs with twist lock connectors is not a good system in a situation requiring many frequent adjustments. This depends on your application, of course.
Ed_Ingold
The DX700 is a pretty good legset, solid if a bit on the heavy side. The leg clamps are not adjustable, but so far that hasn't been a problem. Maybe you should put another head on it. The standard Slik pan-tilt head is solid, but awkward to carry or use compared to a ball head. The quick-release design is not particularly secure and convenient. An Arca-Swiss B1 is well worth the money. In any event, the Arca-Swiss style clamp is the best way to go. Besides mounting security, custom-fitted versions are readily available, and you don't have to remove them to bag the camera. You can put A/S clamps on less expensive ball heads, such as the Gitzo 1377. Not all clamps that look like A/S clamps are compatible. Check the website www.reallyrightstuff.com for more information. If you buy an expensive tripod, you should get a set heavy enough for your toughest job, but light enough you are willing to carry it. The Gitzo G-1348 CF is a good, light-weight tripod suitable for general use. Lighter tripods, like the G-12xx series are a little whippy for MF and 200+mm lenses for the F100 once the wind picks up. If you are willing to carry a couple more pounds of tripod and save $300, the aluminum G-1341 (3-sections) or G-1346 (4-sections) are better buys, IMO. The 1346 fits in a 24" checked bag, and is actually easier to carry than a 1224, because of the leg spacing. If I had to keep only one tripod, it would be the G-1346. The Slik is a tall tripod - a really useful attribute, particularly if you need to point up. Besides quality of construction, I prefer Gitzo tripods for that same reason. I find comparable Bogen tripods a little short unless you use the column.

craig_bridge
Take a look at the G-1348 and G-1325 and ArcaSwiss B1 and Kirk BH-1.
