brad_farwell
Hi All- From what i've read on here, the Phoenix Nikon-oriented Ringflash(RL59N?) doesn't work with the D100 (verification appreciated, or ifanyone has heard different). My father (grumble, grumble) just bought a D100 and a 50mm micro lensfor taking pictures of his woodworking, and I'd love to get him aringflash for Xmas so he can take detail shots more easily, but Ican't really afford the nikon-branded one. So- Is there a cheaper, 3rd party option out there that will workwith the D100, or am I stuck with the Nikon model? Any help appreciated! -brad
greglyon
By 'doesn't work', do you know if it doesn't work at all? I use a SB-28 Flash on my D100. It doesn't work in D-TTL mode, but for macro I can set the flash on manual, focus the lens, and within a couple shots have the correct flash exposure dialed in. I just view the histogram and make sure I'm happy with the effect. Until I change focus (flash to subject distance) it's good to go. Granted, it's not ideal for situations where flash to subject distance is quickly changing, but I bet that's not the case for pictures of woodworking. todd peach seattle, washi
Unless there's a new product I haven't heard of, Nikon doesn't have a ringflash (or twin-tube filter mount flash) that works with the D100 in anything like a TTL mode. It's a pretty big hole in their line as far as I'm concerned.
charles_twiss1
No! Nikon does'nt have a digital ringflash out yet but the SB28 will work just as well, Well almost! Film flash peaks at a different rate than required for digital but with experimenting, especially on this subject, you can get it to work OK. So any independant flash, Sunpak, Vivitar 285 etc will work, provided you "jiggle" aperture/output etc to get correct exposures.
