Silverfast crashing PS CS w/ Epson 3200

Recommended Posts

I got an Epson 3200 perfection pro a few weeks back and scanned a

number of 645 b/w negs with fair success by going through the Import

in PS function using Silverfast. About a week ago, I tried to scan

an entire negative carier (at low res) and after the prescan I tried

extending the selector lines to cover the full frame. That didn't

work, and ever since then, my photoshop has crashed every time I use

Silverfast. I get a prescan of my new image, but with no dotted

selector lines, and as soon as I click on any part of the program,

the screen hangs and photoshop stops responding.

I've reinstalled both photoshop and silverfast. I've gone to the

silverfast website. I've looked through the photo.net archives. I'm

ready to take a sledgehammer to my computer.

I'm running Windows XP, and have not a ton of memory on this

computer, but plenty to handle these images before, and also to

handle them on Epson Scan.

Any thoughts on what might be the trouble? Thanks for any help.

Mac

My usage of XP was with one computer out of 18; it crashed and locked up even with no scanner attached. With Win98se; I have scanned the entire 4x9 inch epson aperture; at full 2400dpi; using only 256megs of memory. Are you saving your files after each scan????

256k is my memory. Only running one scanner. I was not careful in my uninstall.

Thanks for all your help so far. I think I'll use Epson Scan for now on things I don't care all that much about, and my wet darkroom for printing the 645s I really care about. I know a flatbed doesn't really give great results for most people, and I don't have the computer skills or patience to handle my own I.T. stuff. It's making photography not fun. I will call their help desk tomorrow in case there is a simple solution.

Thanks again,

Mac

Silverfast cranks new versions every two or three weeks. Have you got the latest version? I think there's a very recent one.

Also, if you are uninstallyng both Silverfast and Photoshop to make sure this is not an installation glitch, try erasing the entire Photoshop folder tree after the uninstall so nothing is left behind. Silverfast installs itself into the Import-Export folder under Photoshop\Plugins.

On the other hand, it might just be not enough memory. As you say, 256 is not a lot, specially for XP, and Photoshop is a memory hog too. Have you tried running Silverfast as a standalone by means of the Silverfast Launcher? I've found this usually makes for faster scans.
