bob_bell
I have both film and digital bodies and currently have a 50mm/1.8, 85mm/1.8 (borrowing for a while) and a 70-200/4. I am looking for a lens that covers the wide end up to the 70+ range so that I have some overlap but I haven't found anything that offers a decent wide angle on 1.6 crop digitals and is still long enough. So what I have been looking at is the 17-40/4L which meets the primary objective of the wide end but leaves a gap between 40 and 70. I know a lot of people will say the 50 fills the gap well as it is a very good lens and I agree but I was wondering if there are any other solutions outthere aside from a $1500+ lens. Also, will the 1.4x TC II work on the 17-40 to give me the extra coverage, it is not listed in Canon's compatibility guide. I was thinking of getting it for the 70-200 anyway :) Thx in advance-Bob
John Crowe
I ask you, how often do you feel the need to zoom between 40 and 70? Imaging wise they are not that far apart and as you said the 50mm fits perfect! The protruding element on the 1.4x will smash right into the rear element of the 17-40 or just about any lens under the 135mm f2, I think.
rick_helmke
I've been impressed lately with the Tokina 19-35 zoom. It is way less expensive than the L lenses but has good sharpness and contrast where I have used it. It is a little slow but it works with both digital and film bodies. Buy the very best glass you can afford and you'll always be glad you did but there are a lot of outstanding lenses both Canon and 3rd party that deliver the goods until you can afford to upgrade. yakim_peled1
There is no 17-70 lens available for the EOS mount. You must have a two lens setup for this range. It's either 17-40/4 + 50/1.8 or 17-40/4 + 28-70 lens. If the latter, you may want to consider the Tamron 28-75/2.8. It's a very good lens at a reasonable price. Personally, I'd go for the former setup. Happy shooting , Yakim.
