john_woloshyn
Hello,

I¡¦m a Computer graphic artist who bought a D1X a year ago and just got the buffer updated, which is really a great upgrade. I¡¦m on my best days an amateur photographer. But I¡¦m trying my hardest to learn everything and teach myself on how to improving my skills and knowledge. I own a Nikkor 35-105 D 3.5 ¡V 4.5, but I want a sharper and clear lens and I don¡¦t want to waste money on a good lens when I only have to spend a few more hundred dollars for an excellent lens. So at first I was going to buy a Nikkor 17-35 2.8 ED lens, but than with the arrival of the DX lens I thought that I should wait until spring of 2004 when the 17-55 DX lens will be available. But at the same time I would like to buy a new lens now, mainly because I want to see how much a 2.8 lens or higher quality lens will benefit my images. So please, help me make a decision?

Should I purchase:

a) Nikkor 10.5mmDX f/2.8G lens

b) Nikkor 12-24mmDX f/4G

c) Nikkor 17-35mm 2.8ED(than sell it after the 17-55 arrives, loss a few hundred)

d) Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR IF-ED (So I can loss that tripod for low light shots?)

e) Tokina 28-80mm f/2.8

f) just KEEP your lens and wait until spring 2004 !

g) NO! I would get this lens______

Thank you, if anyone can give me their advice I would be most thank full.

-John
david cunningham
I've been using a 35-70mm f/2.8 with my D1x for a while now and I love it. I mostly shoot portraits so it exactly fits the focal range I need. With a Nikon rebate of $70 you can get it for just ove $600.
seandepuydt
Depends on what you are trying to do with the lens. If I was you and I had the cash I would buy the Nikkor 12-24mmDX f/4G. I miss the wide angle something terrible.
john_woloshyn
In regards to what I'm shoot... I eventually want to have a lens for the entire mm spectrum. But it really doesn't matter which lense I get first. I just want to make sure I invest in a lens that are worth investing in. I have one Tamron 19-35, Two Sigma, 3 Nikkors, and they arn't worth a damn to me and I'm kinda pissed that I spent about $400-$500 on each. When I take photo it's not sharp at all. I rather by One $2000 lens every 6 months than have a box full of lens that I really disappoint me half the time. So do you think the 12-24 DX is pretty sharp, I was kinda worried because it's f/4. Would need to always carry my tripod around with me. Anyway I'm just tring to see what you guys would pick as a good buy as I wait for the 17-55 to come out. I figure all of you know nikkor lens better than me. Thanks
edwardchen
h) Buy cheaper 18-35/3.5-4.5. I love every minute using it. Really sharp even at f/3.5! It cost you only <$500 after rebate. I definitely get 17-55 DX. It seems it's a good lens. Meanwhile I would settle with 18-35. read this review by thom hogan: http://www.bythom.com/1835lens.htm
andy_phatana
Hi John
I used Nikon D1 and fall in same problem with you.I bought a lot of diferent lens and my final to put in my bag are 70~300 Ed F 4-5.6,105 F 2.8 Micro and 35~70 F2.8.My favorite is 105 micro. It took sharp and get to 1:1 life size.I didn't know where you lived but I got friend at Simon Camera in Los Angeles and he got lens for rent so you can try before you invest in it.Check around your local store they might have it for you too.I'm also amature too. Most of my stuff had to get approve from my Boss first(My Wife). So I had to do some work before buy it.Good luck to you.Andy
drewt
G) 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor Then save for 17-55 and to compliment the 70-200, TC-14E II 1.4x AF-S, AF-I Teleconverter. To see your images at f/2.8 with the backgrounds blurred will justify even more your passion for photography. The extender will take you a stop to f/4 but you will have 98-280...not to mention the 1.5x multiplier the D1x gives you on top of that. You have a good tool in the D1x...
