Polorizers or Linear Filter ?

I am a new member to this forum. Recently, I purchased a M7 with

50mm f/2.0 Summicron (39mm). I want to shoot black and white and

color. Could someone please recommend "B+W" filters for shooting

black and white mainly for portraits and landscape and a polorizer.

I am in the market for B+W filters and I am alittle confused on the

linear or circular polorizers filters. I read on this forum that a

linear would be suitable for a rangefinder because of the focusing.

Don�t feel embarrassed about it. Years ago when I got my M6 I was told that I needed a circular polarized because of some technicality involving the metering system. I obtained a quality one in simple mount and removed the glass, then put it into the Leica swing out polarizer. To this day I have never had call to use the damned thing so I don�t really know whether it would be effective or not. I too am awaiting an authoritative answer. Hang on!

Circular polarizing filters are only needed in metering systems that use beam splitters. M

cameras do not need them but most R cameras do.

Just as I was beginning to suspect. But, I suppose if anyone ever puts a beam splitter in an M I will be well prepared. I dont suppose my M6 will self destruct if I use the circular polarizer on it.
