thomas_dannhauser
I need some clarification on the focus lock on my Olympus Stylus when I have selected the spot meter... the instruction manual is not clear on this point. When I select spot metering, I aim the camera so that the center brackets are over the area I want to meter, depress shutter button 1/2 way, confirmation light, hold and recompose, shoot. Am I also locking the focus at the same point I am metering? Are both the focus and exposure locked at the same time regardless of what metering I select? (If so, this would mean that I need to spot meter a part of my image that I also want in sharp focus; that I can't independently set focus and exposure.) Thanks for your help and input. tom_s.
On an Olympus Stylus EPIC (the modern cult-classic camera with a fixed 35mm f/2.8 lens), pressing both the flash and self-timer buttons activates a combination spot-meter/spot-focus. So yes, it sets both together, whatever spot you spot-meter on will also be the spot that has sharp focus. Yes, it may be a limitation to some, but it works out well on the Epic anyway. (fewer controls and buttons to push = simpler design, simpler to use.)
stnoonan
Tom S. is correct. I agree that this somewhat limiting function is very practical on this minimalist camera.
Sean
www.stnphotography.com
