Metz vs Rollei SCA Adapter for 6008i

I'm considering getting a Metx 40MZ-31 for my Rollei 6008i:

- I have seen conflicting info about a SCA adapter for Rollei

6008i. The Metz brochure seems to indicate Metz does not make

one, and that you have to buy the one Rollei makes. Yet I see

postings referring to a Metz 356 SCA adapter. Is there such an

adapter? And if so, which is better... the Rollei one or the Metz

one?

- I gather that the Rollei adapter fits on the hotshoe and extends

out from the camera body. Does the adapter allow enough

clearance so that you can mount the 40MZ-3i on it?

- Any reason I couldn't mount the flash directly to the Rollei

hotshoe whenever I wasn't interested in OTF flash?

- Any reason not to get the 40MZ? What's the word on them? I'm

looking for a small, non potato-masher unit that takes regular

batteries and has all the automatic and TTL bells and whistles.

Thanks for your thoughts...

Doug,

I have not heard that Metz produces an SCA 356 adapter (although I am German). I have the Rollei adapter and I have prepared a photo that shows exactly the configuration you mentioned (OK, it is not the 6008i [the predecessor 6008prof.], but you will get the idea). So you can see how it will look like. As I could not add the photo here, I have uploaded it under:

I think the Metz 40MZ3 is exactly what you need. You should be able to directly mount it to the camera when you have the SCA 301 default adaptor (the Metz has just plain contacts, you need something to connect to the camera's shoe). I have just bought mine without adaptors and took the Rollei adaptor.

Doug,

Dirk from Germany gave you good advice ! They just call it the Rollei module, it is to my knowledge also made by Rollei. My hasselblad sca-390 adapter for Metz was also made by Hasselblad.

Whoever makes it does a good job! And the Metz flashes are tops! The beauty is , once you've bought your adapter module , you can use most of the Metz units on your camera. And, if you own more than one camera type, you just get another module adapter for that specific camera.

Dirk...

Thanks for taking the photos. That's exactly what I was hoping

for... that the Rollei SCA 356 provides clearance for the Metz unit

to fit normally in a horizontal position.

I bought the Metz flash yesterday with a Canon EOS SCA adapter

for my 35mm camera, and have ordered the Rollei SCA adapter

from B&H.

Last time I bought a flash unit was 1994. It's amazing how much

they have advanced in the past six or so years. The 40MZ seems

really packed with features.

Thanks all for your comments...

Forgot to mention, FYI, that I discovered that Metz does make a

356 SCA adapter for the 40MZ-3i. Like all the other adapters, it is

a hotshoe module that slides into the bottom of the flash and

provides the actual hotshoe that connects with the camera. Only

problem is that you have to mount it to the Rollei hotshoe in a

vertical position which places it exactly level with the lens, a little

to close for my tastes, and means you can't use the bounce

feature normally.

Doug,

there is one thing I have forgotten to mention: you need 2 adapters to connect the Metz 40 MZ 3 to your Rollei. If you have just the Rollei SCA 356, you will be as disappointed as I was when I bought it.

You cannot directly connect the flash to the Rollei adapter, you need another small adapter called "Connector 300A".

This connector is available from Metz. You need it because the construction of the flash does not allow to put it on the Rollei adapter (you cannot slide the flash in). I do not know why they constructed these things that way, you need to ask Metz why this is needed.

You can recognize the SCA 300A connector in my photo (the one from behind). The connector is just the small piece directly below the flash (its height is about 3cm).
