mathewcook
I'm thinking of purchasing one of these cameras soon. The 1Ds 11.1 MP has beenon the market for quite some time (Sept. 02') and is still a bit more expensivethan the 5D 12.8 MP (Aug. 05'). I know the 1Ds is professional grade, (dust and moisture resistant, 45 ptautofocus, and more customizable features) however, does this translate into thepicture quality? Or has technology caught up and/or surpassed the 1ds' imagequality w/ the 5D? I realize it certainly has w/ the 1Ds Mark II. I suppose these aren't the best cameras to campare side by side, but I wouldappreciate some feedback from anyone who has knowledge of these cameras. Thanks, -Mathew Cook-
ellis_vener_photography
Unless you need some of the model specific features in the 1Ds, I'd go with the 5D. es the iamge quality is different (different chip, different firmware, time marches on. sergey_oboguev
I have never held 5D in my hands, but I owned many other Canon DSLRs (original 1Ds included) and read reviews on 5D (I do not need it as I have 1Ds-II). 5D has *much* lower noise at high ISO. 1Ds is pretty clean up to and including ISO 200 but I would never use it above ISO 250 for anything but snapshots. The difference may not matter much for landscapes or studio shots but does matter for other situations. 5D has much higher recording speed to flash card, with 1Ds you can be stalled waiting, cursing and missing shots. 5D has per-channel histograms, 1Ds only b&w intensity histogram. From the reviews I read, image quality of 5D is not poorer than 1Ds. 1Ds may have 45pt autofocus system, but tracking speed is not all that good; if you need action camera, 1Ds is not the right thing for it. 1Ds eats batteries for lunch. 5D is on a par with newer generation of Canon DSLR that consume very modest amount of power. Overall, outside of some very special requirements I do not see a reason to prefer 1Ds over 5D.
charliexia
unless you shoot every day in the jungle, or in the sahara, go with the 5D. aside from points mentioned above, it's also lighter to carry around.
pavel_olavich
If the #1 thing for you is image quality, then get the 5D...also, it provides better noise performance.
