stephen_shepherd
If the original rubber hood has died on you, or you acquired the lens without, you might want to try fitting the current rectangular hood for the 35mm f/2 Summicron. <A href=http://faculty.smu.edu/sshepher/Summicron40Hood.htm>Here's</a> an account of how I did it.<div></div>
jay_davidson
Very creative. But it might be simpler to order a replacement hood from Leica USA - they're still available.
andrew_hall1
Or from Steven Gandy for a lower price than Leica.
stephen_shepherd
Here's the link to <A href=http://www.cameraquest.com/leicacl.htm>Gandy's solution</a>, which involves unbranded metal hoods whose threads "are not an exact match for those on the lens, but it still works, because after about a half a turn the hood is tight." I know Jay's a CL user, so I trust his knowledge over Gandy's, who says the hoods "have not been available new from Leica in many years."
david dutchison
I have an old metal clip-on vented hood for the 35/50 Summicron. I got it to work by carefully carving and filing a groove around the side if a 40.5 Tiffen uv filter. I guess I really like vented hoods.
jay_davidson
Stephen, I got mine from Leitz about a month ago, both hood and caps. They should still have them in stock.
petr_hlinomaz
Stephen, my Question is not related to your Q, but i thought to ask. Which frame lines do you use with the 40MM , I have recently purchased the 40 MM Rokkor and am indecisive as to what to do if to file the lens to get the 35MM or not.I am using M4's.Thanks Petr
stephen_shepherd
Petr, I have filed the mount to use the 35mm framelines, and concur with the very good reasons for doing this given in Jay's answer to an earlier question of yours--but I have no experience with an M4 as opposed to the M4-P: http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=006DLi
dan flanders
I have never liked the rubber lens hood for the Summicron C, and when mine rotted and fell apart I grafted a rectangular plastic shade made for the Retina onto the remains. It is practically flare free for all practical purposes. I ran into the same problem with the 90. A shortened Leica extension tube grafted onto the threaded ring solved the problem and resulted in a much better shade. Regarding the frame lines, I most always crop my images anyhow so I use the 50mm frame lines in my M6, and it avoids mutilating an expensive lens. michael_kastner
As said above, just order replacements by Leica. I did this last week. Hood = 12518 = 29.00 EURO. Hood cap = 14191 = 6.03 EURO. Shipment = 1 week. NOTE: 2/40 hood = screw-in; 2/35 hood = clip-in. BTW: current rectangular hood for the 35mm f/2 Summicron = 12526 = 90.00 EURO. Hood cap = 14043 = 15.00 EURO. FWIW: Today, 1.00 EURO = 1.15160 US$.
joel_matherson
Jay Davidson, how much did they charge you for a new hood and cap? Would love to know.
jay_davidson
Total for hood & cap with shipping was $49.50.
stephen_shepherd
The solution I have suggested cost me about $75: new hood from Adorama and unused 11251 ring from Pacific Rim. Other hooding solutions for this great lens have also been discussed in <a href=http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=005z3h>this thread</a>. stephen_shepherd
Just a note to say that my webpage about the hood modifications has moved. I have also added notes on using the 12504 hood as an alternative to the 12526: <a href="http://myweb.lmu.edu/sshepherd/Summicron40Hood.htm"</a> http://myweb.lmu.edu/sshepherd/Summicron40Hood.htm
