Leica Digilux II Sample Images

Recommended Posts

I suppose this «to-be-released-next-spring» camera is the same as the Panasonic

Lumix DMC-LC1, only with the name Leica stamped on it. Or is it the other way

around? ;-) And it looks like the closest one can come to a digital Leica M. Or R?

What will be interesting is what model will be sold where, and at what price. Surely

they can't sell both in the same countries at the same price. Who would buy a

Panasonic when they can buy a Leica for the same money?

I confess to being eager to see pictures made with it myself.

As mentioned, the camera doesn't hit dealers' shelves until Feb. 2004.

You can get a rough approximation of its resolution by going to

http://www.dpreview.com

and looking at the gallery of full-resolution (2560 x 1950?) sample images in their reviews of the Nikon 5700 and Minolta A1, which use a 5 megapixel-2/3" imaging chip just like the Digilux-2. Even the Nikon and Minolta have subtly different 'looks' (as well as different noise/sharpness levels) so it won't be an absolute match for the Leica/Panasonic lens or software - but it's the closest thing out there for the next month or so. They give a fair idea of what kinds of artifacts (noise, aliasing, color fringing, etc.) this size chip will deliver.

dpreview also has links to some folks' early Sony/Zeiss 828 images (under the "News" section). It's interesting to see how much the noise and color-fringing jump when Sony tries to cram 8 megapixels into the same surface area as the 5Mp Nikon/Minolta chips. If you were dreaming that the D2 would be 8Mp - count your lucky stars it isn't.

The only other possibility is for some Leica forum members to check out any local

"Leica days". There was a poster who said that he got to handle the Digilux 2 at a

Leica event at his local store. There is one coming up on Tuesday at Kenmore Camera

in Kenmore washington. But since I have to go to Seattle already on Monday, I doubt

that I want to drive down again the next day.

If anyone is in the seattle area, they might call Glazers and talk to their Leica guys.

There was supposedly a Leica Day on Dec 18th. So if they had the Digilux 2 at that

event, they will likely have it at the Kenmore one.

If anyone is going to a Leica day event, throw a CF card in your pocket in case the

Digilux 2 is there. You might be able to snap off a shot or two. No, it wouldn't tell

anyone much, but it's better than just guessing.

Otherwise wait until Leica sends out samples to the reviewers.

I'm alsovery much interested in this camera and can't wait to get my hands on it to try it out. What I'd like to find out foremost is -will this second digilux give great shots beyond its ASA 100 setting - the common critique against Digilux 1. Can someone elucidate on this?

If its ASA 400 setting is anything like the D-SLR pro leagues then I'd sign my name up for a reserved stock.

Just checked with B & H Photo. Digilux 2 is now listed and will be available soon. If anyone has handled this cam, I only have to questions to ask:

1) Is it any good at ASA 400 setting

2) Does its perspective at 28mm (35mm equiv)change when zoomed up to 90mm. Because that's one thing I noticed with my existing digicam, it gives the same wide-angle perspective (background far away; vertical lines distorted/bent) at any focal point, even at full zoom.

Thanks
