carl smith
I'd say the s400 has a better lens and offers pretty good image quality, especially for its compact size. You may also want to consider some of the Olympus cameras as right now I consider Canon and Olympus to be making the best digital point and shoots. Due to a slew of electrical and mechanical problems with some coolpix cameras I can't really recommend them to anyone. AF will generally be ok to not so great due to the lack of an AF assist light. At least in this case the Nikons lens isn't any slower, and has better macro ability than the Canon. Generally though aside from that I've not been impressed with many coolpix lenses, although a friend of mine has the 3100 and for a simple little camera I've not got any complaints for what it can do. In some ways I would say the S400 is a slightly higher level (and much more robust) camera. Again, I would also suggest a look at some of the olympus offerings. wen_lin
If the S400 is the IXUS 400, then read on. If you want a point and shoot camera, the S400 is better. Better body and size. But the CP4300 give shutter and apeture priority and manual. 4 mp Point and shoot cameras Canon S400 Pentax Optio S4 Olympus Mju 400 4 mp cameras that gives manual controls cp4500 cp4300 powershot A80
