Regarding lenses on digital cameras, when it says "28-90 equivalent," does that mean perspective (compression or expansion of distance) and depth of field will look the same as it does with a 28 mm lens, for instance, or is it more like enlarging the center section of a super wide-angle lens?

The 28 - 90 "equivalent" simply means that the angle of view and magnification are comparable to a 28 - 90 on 35mm format. Depth of field is just as immense as you would expect from a 7mm/f2 to 22mm/f2.4 lens. And the look of the images will be about the same as you get from other digicams with tiny sensors. The only similarity this thing has to a Leica M is the body shape.

The plot thickens. Today also dpreview.com noted a panasonic DCM-FZ10 with a /Vrio Elmarit with the equivalent of 28-420mm with image stabilization 4 megapixels at price of$999. that camera is also listed on the panasonic USA. So perhaps Leica is now knee deep into optics for digital photograph. It's interessting the LC1 is only on the panasonic Japan site.
