I love this forum :)

Recommended Posts

Some of you may already know, I'm not a Leica user, but quite a big

fan of this forum. Don't know why. Maybe it's the W/NW postings.

Maybe its the flame postings. Maybe its the forum members. Maybe

all of the above. I think the Leica forum is fun. I haven't tried

other forums yet beside the MF forum, but this forum is already a

handfull. BTW, I must give Matt Marreck a credit for luring me in

this forum.

As Kevin Mendenhall quoted in another thread:

"...the only forum on this site that allows such free-form discussion

and such liberal picture posting privilges happens to be the Leica

forum ..."

Like I said, I have not tried other forums yet on this site but is

the statement true?

FYI, I used to be a fanatic of the GardenWeb forums. Now I change

course to Photo.net. I'm sure glad I found this forum. All I did

was search Yashica D on Google and it leads me to this. I learned a

lot and fast. I felt I learn faster than reading books or

magazines. Maybe because I can ask and I get immediate answers.

Anyway, just sharing.

This forum is populated by obstinate, talented, loud, opinionated, silly, technically challenged, collecting, hidebound, generous, narrow minded, expert, artistic, rude, kind, professional, funny, non-pro, too serious, simple thinking, helpful, expansive, jerky and photography/camera addicted people from all over the world.

Great, isn't it!! :>}

Hi Leo: It is very easy to become a Leica owner. To help you make this jump, I have a new two page list of brand new Leica stuff that I will be offering for sale at bargain prices within the next few minutes. Contact me to make this acquisition quick and easy for your 'jump.' Regards and Good Luck! Bill<div>0068qp-14708884.thumb.JPG.8a0257af313a462a706c62e2d05e5f38.JPG</div>

Brad, this is the 'irony' I was referring to in an earlier post. The Leica forum is the only forum that allows <i>anyone</i> to post a pic, regardless what camera was used to take it. Funny, ain't it, how the allegedly biggest gear-hounds on the site are the ones who seem to care the most about the <i>pictures</i> as well.

<p>

If everyone followed your lead and shot digital only, what forum would host your pics?

But Kevin, I don't find that the least bit "ironic." The fact that any

<I>photographer</I> (rather than someone tied to a camera

brand) can post photos here comes from Tony's

guidelines/views.<P>

I guess I would disagree strongly on that, not on principal, but

from what I've seen. Do you have some examples in mind?

Leo, a few words from the forum glossary to help you understand things here:<P><B>Wanker</B> - word from England, meaning masturbator. Used to describe people who buy expensive Leicas and don't use them (yes, they DON'T use them). <B>Tosser</B> is another word for wamker, and so is <B>fondler</B>.<P>Takinda Peez - a porn poster on this forum, probably Phil Kneen. The name Takinda Peez comes from the English phrase "Taking the piss," which means "to make fun of."<P><B>Bokeh</B> - This is the Loch Ness monster of this group. It is elusive, Jay claims it doesn't exist, but some clainm to have seen it. Refers to out-of-focus area in a picture, which is strange because the very same people are rabid about having the sharpest lenses. Go figure.<P>I'm sure others will add to your vocabulary. Best of luck. PS. Go digital.

If there's a better forum than this one on the site, please direct me to it. I can't help but wonder why you (Grant and Jeff, too) would bother to post tons of pics here if you hold the general level of photography in such low regard. Is it really all that bad? I see plenty of good work posted here.

No, I don't hold it in low regard. There are a lot of good

photographers here. You are purposely drawing conclusions not

supported by what was said. I see no correlation on this forum

between fondness of "gear" and good photography.

What do you mean by a better forum. In terms of what???

Kevin, out of curiosity, I did a very quick tally of the photogs here

whose work I really like. Came to 12 people, and I'm sure I

missed a few. Of those 12, 2 or 3 might fit into the "gear-head"

category, at least from what I've seen here. Any conclusions from

that? Also, I still don't understand your comment about there

being a better forum on this site. Did someone claim otherwise?

Maybe that's why I don't get the irony you referred to.

I think I figured out the misunderstanding. When I said "gear hounds" I was referring to the Leica forum as a whole, and not any specific photographer. The remarks that follow seem to make sense, then.

I can't imagine a better forum, myself. Lots of pics, many of them good, and lively discussion, too. And if the "no words" and other picture threads are only allowed here because Tony has looser guidelines than the other moderators, well lucky for us.

The irony I was referring to is a simple one: Leica owners have the reputation of being gear-obsessed fondlers who rarely take pictures, yet the Leica forum hosts tons of good pics, (some of them even shot with Leicas.) But since you've attributed this to Tony's generous guidelines, I guess there's no irony involved at all. It's just our good fortune. Cheers, and good night.

So you are THE Tony? The "famous" keeper of the forum? Well along with the other members, thanks for the freedom-of-speech/posting policy in this forum.

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

Matt: I mention last name to make sure I addresed the right person. Unless there's no other matt in this forum. Or do you prefer me calling Matt von Toronto? Matt of Toronto?? Matt de Toronto??
