scott_youmans
I'm looking for an inexpensive flash option for my N80. I've been considering the SB24, SB25, & SB26. Does anyone have any recommendations among these? Has anyone used the SB24 or SB25 with a N80? Did it work well? Does the autofocus assist & zoom head function work with the N80? I read where the SB24 does NOT have 3D multisensor or red eye reduction. Do I need the 3D multisensor functionality? How does it work? I don't care for the red eye reduction because the flash will be mounted on a stroboframe. Other key criteria (that all 3 of these flashes meet): swivel & pivot head, manual mode, autofocus assist & zoom head (hopefully these functions work with the N80), reasonably cheap ($100 - $125 on Ebay). Any knowledge about these flashes and how well they work with a N80 would be appreciated. Scott
wayne_cornell1
They've been selling a Sigma 430ST or 500 flash on ebay that has virtually all the functions you want (the head only pivots up and down on the 430ST) for $80 BIN for the 430ST. I have one and it works great although I'm sure some of the Nikon models have more horsepower. It has the zoom head, af assist, manual and ttl modes and even works with features like second curtain. tony_p3
Hi Scott, I'd add to your list the SB28, you should be able to get a mint second user one for only a few more dollars than you would pay for the others. I have one and it's a beauty. HTH ... Tony
spencer_hahn
Scott-my first external flash was the SB-25. It's pretty much identical in specs to the SB-28 except it's bulkier and has slower refresh time. Mind, I used it on an N65 but the N65 and N80 are similar enough that I'm sure it'll work. The autozooming worked, and I'm almost positive the IR assist did, too. The SB-26 is almost identical, as well, as the only basic difference is Slave mode. (actually, I just checked my Magic Lantern SB-28 guide and it says it includes "torch-type" red-eye reduction, which I'm thinking is just the white annoyance light) If you're on a tight budget, I'd say go for the SB-25, because it's dirt cheap and is still pretty much SOTA. The SB-24 isn't even compared to the SB-28 in the ML guide, so I kinda consider it in a 'lower league' (although in reality it's probably just as capable). bob_cook
Scott - I use an SB24 on an N90s and it works just fine. AF assist works for sure, and most important, the shots are perfectly exposed and print beautifully. It's an older body than your N80, so I think you'd be OK. I also use an SB23 when I want small size and weight. It also works great. Hope this helps, Bob
artofseeing
Hi scott, I use Sb-25 with N80 and have no problem with it. All the features of the flash work perfectly (zoom, TTL, etc). I would highly recommentd it. My only p[ain is the size of the flash unit. That thing is huge and almost doubles my weight. I have use the MB-16 grip and that adds up to a lot of weight. I heard the SB-26 has newer features and it is preffered over enven the SB-28. Also, Let me know if you need the manual, I can mail it to you as a pdf doc.
