wolfgang_dreher
Hello, I want to buy a Zoom lens for my Canon AE-1 Program. I decided to take either the 3,5-4,5/35-70 mm or the 4,0/35-70 mm. Which one would you take? Which one has the higher optical performance? Thank you for your answers. Regards Wolfgang Dreher
timothy_fitzgerald
Hi, Wolfgang!
Based on my experience, aside from the variable aperture ratio of the newer lens (which means that your depth-of-field will change a little when zooming), the lenses are essentially equivalent from the standpoint of optical performance. The later f/3.5-4.5 version is also more compact and lighter, and has macro capability, whereas the earlier f/4 version has a bit more durable construction and, of course, the constant aperture ratio throughout the zooming range.
I'm selling examples of both of these lenses; click H E R E to check them out, and contact me off forum if interested.
