Canon Zoom lens 3,5-4,5/35-70 mm vs. 4,0/35-70 mm

Hello,

 

I want to buy a Zoom lens for my Canon AE-1 Program.

I decided to take either the 3,5-4,5/35-70 mm or the 4,0/35-70 mm.

Which one would you take? Which one has the higher optical

performance?

Based on my experience, aside from the variable aperture ratio of the newer lens (which means that your depth-of-field will change a little when zooming), the lenses are essentially equivalent from the standpoint of optical performance. The later f/3.5-4.5 version is also more compact and lighter, and has macro capability, whereas the earlier f/4 version has a bit more durable construction and, of course, the constant aperture ratio throughout the zooming range.<P>
