I have recently purchase a used Nikkor 300mm f2.8 lens. However, I

was unable to find much information online. So, I wonder if anyone

know any details about the lens.

The following is the info I can provide:

Nikon ED

AF NIKKOR 300mm 1:2.8

There are also lock screw I have no idea what they are?

Starting from the F-Mount

1> Filter holder knob (I know this one)

2> Focus range ring lock (I think this is for limiting the focus

distance)

3> Focus range ring lock (I think this is for limiting the minimun

focus range)

***4> Preset-focus ring lock screw (This is the one I have no idea

about, it label as Preset-focus ring lock screw) But I don't know

what it does, and how to use it)

Regards,

Eddy

Eddy--I just handled a Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 AI-S tonight for the first time, and the preset focus ring kinda stunned me, too. I'd never seen anything like it! I'm almost positive the point of it is so you can quickly get back to a preset focus distance in case you're in a hurry. Pretty cool, huh?

Also, I think the "lock screw starting from the F-mount" is the minimum aperture lock.

You are correct as to the function of the "prefocus ring". It enables you to focus to "where the action is" yet turn your attention to something currently interesting, and subsequently returning to the original subject. This ring was common to the long lenses as focussing was more critical with them. I have one on my 500, and use it all the time for nature photos.
