Older cases fit IIIc?

Recommended Posts

Hello, does anyone know if cases made for older Leica screwmount

cameras with the slightly shorter body will fit a IIIc? (assuming

the tripod screw size matches...) Or do I need a case specifically

for the IIIc/IIIf? My apologies if this has been covered before, I

searched the archives but didn't find this particular question.

Thanks.

I believe the IIIc was the first of the longer bodies Leitz made. So any cases made for bodies older than the IIIc will not fit.

By the way, does anyone know the reason Leitz started making the bodies longer? It coincided with the rangefinder/viewfinder being incorporated into the body, rather than being an add-on. But what necessitated the longer length?

The post-WWII Leicas required a newer shutter design necessitating about 1mm increase in body width. You can squeeze the IIIc into an earlier leather case, but it does impose some stress on the stitching. It always seemed moot to me as the case was added weight and interfered with my photography. If I needed equipment protection I used a small fabric bag, just large enough to carry a light meter, cable release, small table-top tripod, bright-line viewer, appropriate filters, film cassettes, and most important: a lens hood! If I want to use it as a P&S camera, I just jam it in my pocket, without all the other aforementioned equipment.
