420EX and 10D with 17-40 lens, wide angle coverage?

Hello,

I'm considering the 420EX for my EOS-10d with a 17-40L lens.

I realize that the angle of coverage of the 420 is 24-105mm but the

1.6 factor of the 10d makes that lens equal to a 27-64mm.

Am I thinking correctly here or do I need a flash with wider angle of

coverage?

Thanks

It will be fine. Canon have not had the wit to implement a system in the 1.6X digital bodies whereby it zooms the flash to cover what the sensor will see, rather than to the 35mm coverage.

For example, it would be clever if the flash zoomed to 80mm when you are using a 50mm lens on a 1.6X body, because there will be no vignetting caused by this but there would be a useful increase in flash power available.

Are you sure the lens hood will block a shoemount flash with this lens? I've used the 420EX with the 300/4L IS USM, 100-300/4.5-5.6 USM, and 28-135/3.5-5.6 USM, all of which are roughly comparable in size to, or larger than, the 17-40/2.8L USM, all with hoods attached, and never had a problem with the lens hood casting a shadow. With a pop-up flash, sure, you'll have shadows, but I wouldn't think a shoemount flash would.
