cxc
Just picked up a Mamiya-made lens shade for my 180mm lens for my Mamiya C3. It is square, and one side has a hinge across the front, allowing it to pivot outward 90 degrees. Question: what is it for? TIA, CXC
ilkka
Just guessing but could it be that it hinges out of the way so that you can adjust a polarizer? My Pentax 67 300 mm lens hood has a little window for just that purpose.
russ_britt1
Some company made a shade that opened to allow drop in filters. Are their slots in the shade for square filter holders?
graham_patterson1
The angle of the upper surface can be adjusted to reduce glare and intrusion into the field of the viewing lens.
carl smith
when it is place does the hood block the viewing lens?
wharridge
Graham has the correct answer, if you look at the focussing screen and adjust the flap you will see that the image is best at one position of the flap.
andy mcleod
I'm not so sure. Keep in mind that it's a Twin lens reflex. The viewscreen is just a close neighbor to the image on the film.
Never used one of em, but AFAIK the hinge is so you can compose without the filter vignetting the viewing lens, and then move the flap so that it does not vignette the taking lens
siu_fai_au1
I have this hinged shade for my 180 Super but I find it pretty awkward in use. Instead, I'm now using a rubber collapsible shade. It is much smaller and much easier to carry. The rubber shade does block part of the viewing lens but it does not show up on the focusing screen. Another drawback is that you need to remove the chrome protective ring to install the hood. Siu Fai
cxc
Thanks, Graham and Wayne. I took the C3 out in the bright sun this weekend and in fact moving the top of the shade just a couple degrees has a big effect on the brightness/glare of the view image. Kind of amazing that it doesn't actually block the view, since it cuts right across the front of the lens.
