tim_stahl
What digital video camera has the best image stabilization? I am looking at shooting out of a small airplane, and don't want the vibration effecting the image. Any ideas? Thanks, Tim
douglas_coon1
I did some shooting from a helicopter with a Canon XL-1 that worked out well. The image stabilization is an optical system so it had no effect on image quality
emre
You really have to state your budget. There are two types of internal stabilization: digital and optical. Then there are gyroscopic solutions ("steadicam").
dave_redmann
I haven't reasearched the subject recently, but historically the optical image stabilization systems were far better than the digital ones. I have an older Canon Hi-8 camcorder with optical image stabilization, and the system works very well for my use. Just be aware that I'd expect fairly high frequency vibrations in a helicopter or airplane that may differ from the somewhat lower frequency jitters for which image stabilization was designed. I don't know whether/how this will affect performance. In Mini-DV camcorders at least, optical image stabilization used to mean some Canon models and the top-of-the-line Sony models: Canon XL-1, XL-1S, GL-1, (I think it's called) GL-2, plus I think some of the Opturas and some others (can't recall which); Sony DCR-VX1000, DCR-VX2000, DCR-TRV900, and DCR-TRV950. I think some other brands (Panasonic?) have recently developed or licensed optical image stabilization systems.
