choosing between plaubel makina and rolleiflex...

Recommended Posts

hello,

Two cameras haunt me in my dreams at the moment, and one of them i've

rented for this week, in order to get to knwo it a bit: Plaubel

Makina 67 is in my hands right now, and the rolleiflex f V is still

waiting for me in a shop window...

i've listed the pro's and cons (Weight, size, format, type, price,

obviousness) of these quite different camera's, and for me they're

about equal.

One thing i don't know is: how do the lenses compare?

So it's the Nikon 80 mm 2.8 versus the Carl Zeiss Tessar 75 mm 3.5. I

have a rollei 35 with a tessar 3.5 and i LOVE the pictures this

little lens makes... but i cant really describe why. Am curious to

see the first rolls of the PM. Maybe anyone here knows what to look

for?

thanks!

Well I haven't looked at many pictures from the PM, but the optics should be excellent. Likewise, I really love the look of the CZ Tessar 75/3.5 (sharpness is great, ghosting non-existant). So it's not going to be easy for you, you really must choose which "look" suits you better and how you like to handle the cameras (IMO, the 'flex seems to have better ergonomics than the PM, but others might disagree).

Oskar, just to give you a follow up: you were right, the nikon lens on the Plaubel IS great, as to sharpness. Only complaint would be that maybe, just maybe, there is some perspective distortion near the edge of the frame, like door posts bending a bit. Or just not looking as straight as with the rollei 35 I mentioned. Or maybe I'm just being fussy. If i can manage to get a decent scan i'll show it here.

For the rest; the 67 format is great, the ruggedness of the Plaubel is fantastic. I wish more cameras were built like that.

But... the dim, difficult to focus rangefinder (maybe its just me not being used to rangefinders), the not-working light meter, the absence of both cable shutter release socket AND self timer, and finally it's hefty price tag of 1150 euros made me bring it back after the week's rent/trial.
