Metz Mecablitz 45 CT-4 only gives very low output?

I'm having trouble with my Metz flash. For some reason, no matter what

the settings - Manual, TTL... - it only gives a quite low-power flash

of light. When turned on, the flash fully charges, as it should. But

the flashes are always the same low-power level, and it takes multiple

flashes to empty the charge.

 

I need to know what can cause this. Depleted flash head (or whatever

it's in English)?

It sounds like you MAY be on one of the fractional power modes, if your unit has such settings. Check your owner's manual.

I considered that, however the fractional power modes are M 1/2 and M 1/4, and they're chosen from the same wheel on top of the flash as the other modes are, so when I'm in, say M, it should be full power.

Have you considered the possibility that the unit is broken?

Yes, it could be broken somehow, obviously. But the question is, how and what is broken, and can it be easily (and cost-effectively) repaired.

Generally speaking, strobes either work or they don't, but I don't recall any only working on low power. Maybe the selector switch is busted. As for repairs, how old is it?

I believe Bogen is the importer and also services them. Give them a call. I am sure you will not get an exact estimate without sending it in. I called about a Gossen Luna Pro meter and was told what the average repair cost. My repair was that exact amount. If you request an estimate, they will send it to you in writing. They repair only if you authorize it. Otherwise they ship back to you at your expense if so desired. Its probably worth it.

I don't know how old this is exactly, I guess it's from around 1990, but doesn't seem to be very much used. As for getting it repaired, don't know where I should do that in Finland... will see...
