can any one tell me whether the FPS rates stated in the specs are

increases when shot at lower res or whether the buffer size is

The short version is you get 3 FPS for nine frames, the end, no matter what the setting is. I haven't a clue as to why?

The reasons are that the frame rate is mechanically limited to 3fps (think of e.g. a Rebel Ti with 2.5fps), and the buffer is taking full sensor dumps, which are then being processed into images at the chosen quality. The detailed speed tests show that when the buffer fills, the next shot can happen sooner if you're using a lower resolution than if you're using a higher one.
