maktime
Hiyas all, I just wanted to ask what kind of small flash would be good for macrophotography? I am thinking of getting a kirk butterfly bracket and a small flash. I don't have TTL so am looking for a manual flash. Ummm if anyone can help me with suggestions on what kind of flash i could get and also pros and cons I'd really appreciate it thanks all!!
arnabdas
<I>"I don't have TTL so am looking for a manual flash. "</I> <P> You can use a TTL flash in manual mode. In case you are not looking at cost-savings, it will be wiser to invest in a TTL flash. <P> I'd recommend SB-23, SB-22s or SB-50dx. all are small, lighweight and good for macro. <P>A lot of people here may not like SB-50dx but it works well for me. SB50 has added advantage that it will work in TTL mode with Coolpix/Nikon DLSRs if in future you upgrade to the nikon Digital line. Has a build-in slave and a nice foot. <P> Hope it helps! -- Arnab
richard_cochran
<center> <img src="http://webs.lanset.com/rcochran/prettypics/milkmaids.jpg"> </center> <p> For an F2, the standard flash of the day would have been a Vivitar 283. It's still available, and a great value, but it doesn't have manual adjustability without an extra accessory. The Sunpak 383 has everything the Vivitar has, plus manual adjustability and swivel ability. <p> There are some smaller flashes by Vivitar, not sure of the model numbers offhand. But I find that a Sunpak 383 at full power, when diffused, gives me around f/16 at close range (1:2) on ISO 100 film, and I wouldn't want to open up much for DoF reasons. If you aim the undiffused flash directly at the subject, you can probably get away with a smaller, less powerful flash than the 383. <p> The above photo was taken with a Sunpak 383, bounced up at a flat white reflector which was held directly above the flower. ISO 100 film, Full power, f/16, 105mm Micro Nikkor at 1:2.
Greg M
Try the Metz 34CS-2. I use one all the time with my F2A/F2AS outfit. It's a great size, powerful, and has three Auto settings, with an included wide adapter that goes to 24mm.
