<p>Allow me to join in the chorus of welcoming you to the wonderful world of picture posting, Hyatt. The first version looks better on my screen, as well. </p>

 

<p>As to scanning tips, I think the first priority is to calibrate/adjust one's monitor (brightness and contrast) reasonably well - even if somewhat roughly using a grayscale or the "calibration" tool included with Photoshop. That way, you know that what you're seeing on the screen will be reasonably close to what others (with reasonably calibrated screens) are seeing, too. </p>

 

<p>Then, it's just a matter of learning the scanning software and your image editing package, the objective being to try to get the scan to look as close to the original as possible. "Just", of course, is said with tongue in cheek, as both scanning and digital editing are art forms in themselves. </p>
