vlf___1
If I would like to shoot bull elk from the road, I know the Horseshoe park located near one of the entrance of the Rocky Mountain Ntl Park is a good place at sunset. If you want to shoot squirrels and/or chipmunks, try a picnic area near the same Horseshoe park. Deer and some cubs can be spot on the road from Estes Park to the Park entrances (and are friendly, unfortunately for them... people do feed them !).
Now if I'd like to maximize my chance to spot wild animals, I know the park is best during the fall season (specially during the end of September and during October).
As I read that some of us have had some really good experiences with this Ntl Park, I am asking for the details (things like what, when and where, trails name, locations... and even, specific gear). I also heard that some places may be crowded early on the morning (5 AM) because of fantastic sunrise there... Please share...

bob_gleason1
I work at the Park on weekends as a volunteer and also take a lot of photos there. If you just want elk and big horns Horseshoe Park is your best bet especially in spring and October (for elk). Are you close enough to go there every weekend or is it a once a year trip?
I have found after being there every weekend for two years including winter months , finding wildlife is a unpredictable affair. I have shots of many animals but stumbled on most of them unexpectedly.
Give me more info on your ability to visit and I can give you some tips. chris_hansen
There is a small clearing on the right hand side of the road near the north entrance to the park (from the Estes side) that can sometimes be superb for Bighorns fighting. Also look high up in the rocks for white spots(Rear Ends) further in on this road.
