cd thacker
The <a href=http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0304/feature6/index.html> last assignment </a>shot by <a href=http://mountainlight.com/rowell.gr.html>Galen Rowell</a> appears in this month's (April issue) National Geographic, shot in Tibet's rugged Chang Tang. (And while you're at Rowell's site, you might want to check out his <a href=http://mountainlight.com/rowellpages/gr_camera_bag.html>camera bag</a> and his interesting, recommended list of "<a href=http://mountainlight.com/reading/visual_perception_reviews.html> visual perception books for photographers</a>".) pns
while on my way to office, I was just listening to NPR program about the very assignment. At the ripe age of sixty two years, only Galen Rowell could take on assignments like this.
efusco
Just to be picky, it really wasn't his final "shoot", maybe his final assignment though. His final shoot was the workshop he was doing in the Bering straits with Frans Lanting which is what he was returning from when his plane went down. I have no idea if any of the photos from that shoot were recovered. Frans had a photo of himself with Galen and Barbara and Fran's sign. other on his web site at one time, may still be there now. I did see that article and it was impressive.
dan_andrews
Given Galen's incredible portfolio, I'm eager to grab a copy of NG and see what's there. His unique and inspirational approach to photography left a permanent mark on the art.
dmanthree
I love it. A check of his camera bag shows some of the Nikon glass that the wolves attack on the internet equipment newsgroups. And, since some of my gear is the same as his, I guess it's only a matter of time before National Geographic discovers me. Right. I can't believe he made that trek at age 62! Incredible. Totally unfair, but incredible.
bill_dewberry
Wait till you're 62, then you'll believe it. Not that much different than 32.
