richard_brown1
Hi Forum Members. I am seeking advice. I currently own 3 M's: M4, M6, "Hexar RF". If I had to part with one or two, which would you let go? Thanks for your input.
albert knapp md
Hexar RF and M4 in that order.
john_r._fulton_jr.
I see two M's and another camera listed. I would agree with the good doctor's order.
roger c
I'd drop the Hexar then the M6, because if you ever regret selling the M6 it's cheap to buy another one.
h._p.
I'd definitely hang on to the M4.
john_r._fulton_jr.
Let me expand my answer. Of the three cameras I'd hang onto the M6. I am saying that as a user of Leica M cameras. I own a number of M's going back to the M2. I love those cameras. However, if I had to keep only one camera (perish the thought) I'd have to keep the M6. For me and my photography, the built-in meter is very important and makes it easier to shoot. Believe me, I have shot thousands of rolls of transparencies (going back to Kodachrome II) with my M2's and meter, but my preference if for the built-in meter of the M6. I don't know about the "HexarRF" so I can't judge its' usefulness.
al_kaplan1
25 years from now the M4 will still be going strong, feel silky smooth, and work fine with whatever meter you own. The M6 may or may not, finding batteries may be iffy, and electronic parts for the meter may not be available. Your repair person will need help getting up off the floor when he/she finally stops laughing when you bring in your Hexar for sevice.
richard_brown1
I definitely hear what you are saying John R. F. Jr., but you can do that with the M4. A hand held meter, used correctly and bracketed if need be, is going to provide equal if not better results with chrome and black and white film but, that's another discussion. phil_kneen4
the m6 w-o meter becomes an m4 w-o a self timer. wanker
furcafe
I'm actually w/Mr. Kneen. I would sell the M4 1st. The Hexar RF has features the other 2 don't have & which *you* may find important (AE, etc.). If you want the M4 experience, just take the batteries out of the M6. richard_brown1
Phil, Where have you been? Rumour had it you were a casualty in the South of France. Wanker.
jim_a
Hexar first. Then it's Sophie's Choice. I agree with others that the M6 is a better user camera due to the meter, but M4's are are not as common. My fear is that down the road you will regret parting with the M4. kaiblanke
I would definitely keep the one I use most often and keep the one you like most as a backup. Havin not used a RF, but handled one some time ago for me it would be the RF as a shooter to keep and the M4 to adore as well. YMMV, though. gerry_szarek
I own a M4-P and the Hexar RF, I would definitely keep the RF, beside the AE, it has 1/2000 and 1/4000 shutter speed. The M6 should be as reliable as the M4, so I would sell the M4. Gerry
djphoto
Richard, I think you should take the consensus of above posters and put the Hexar up for sale first. Then you should e-mail me so we can work out an acceptable price for me to buy it.
michael_kastner
You asked me for my opinion and here it is: I'd keep the M6 and chuck the others.
richard_brown1
Thank you gentlemen for all your input. It's not an easy one is it? I'll sleep on it and I may be in touch with you Mr. Dave J. Best regards, Richard V. Brown
dan_brown4
Sell them all and buy one MP. Street price is now down $150 from the list.
jay_.
Richard, is this a theoretical question or are you seriously considering selling one or two of your bodies? The M4 IMO is the most user-friendly, mechanically durable and exquisitely finished 0.72 body of all, even though it lacks a meter. If you decide to sell it, let me know. ilkka
When and how did you get them? What condition are they in? I think we need to know more before a really good opinion can be given. If you bought all new and they are still in good condition, I would definitely keep the M4.

vic_.
It would help if you could give the reason why such a situation could arise. If it's money, then I suggest you dump the Hexar and also give up a few restaurant meals, or eat take out food. Then you won't have to get rid of any M bodies. raymond_tai
I would keep the M6 and sell the rest and here are the reasons: Hexar RF: .58x finder too limited to wide angles but if you use a 28mm more than half the time then this is the one to keep. M4: No meter (if that is important to you) and cannot accept a Rapidwinder. M6: Metered; .72x finder and can accept a Rapidwinder which IMHO is the most important accessory out there along with Lutz's Shade.
