todd_phillips1
Forgive me if this has been posted and I missed it, but there is a Leica sighting in the current film, "The Quiet American". There is an American photojournalist (bit part) who uses a Leica and what appears to be 50 collapsible Summicron in a couple of scenes. I couldn't tell which body, but the film is set in Vietnam in 1952, so if they are true to form (they were in using correct firearms) then it probably was a LTM, though they could have fudged and used an M.Just thought Mr. Nemeth could put it down in his collection. It is a good film, by the way. sandy.
Todd, as I remember, you are very good in your research of spoting Leicas in films. I suppose this is also a passion of yours. Good work and congrats.
matt_m__toronto_
there's also a leica appearance in the recently released "one hour photo" ;and in one of the bond films appears a leica (sean connery era)
jack_lo_..._t_o
How about John Sayles' Passionfish where the heroine takes a snap with an M3 and the sound is that of an SLR? I love John Sayles, but jeez...
george_conboy1
The Leica in the movie "One Hour Photo" had to be a paid product placement. In an early scene a woman brings in her camera and the clerk says "A Leica Minilux! That's a nice camera." or something like that. The specific product name being mentioned caught my attention. If Leica didn't pay for that one, I'd be surprised. The film was nothing special, though.
kevin m.
In the movie "The Weight of Water" a female photographer uses what looks like a black M4.
Nowhereman
Forgive me, but I always find these "Leica sighting" threads absurd as I can never comprehend why people find it interesting or worthy of note that a Leica can be seen in a movie or being used by a celebrity. In the case of the Quiet American, as it is well-known that the Leica was the camera of choice for photojournalists at the time of the story, it's wholly unremarkable that it should be seen in this film. Currently, few photojournalists use a Leica; is this why people find it interesting when a Leica shows up in a film? Or is it that people feel that their own use of the Leica is "validated" by seeing them is a movie or being used by a celebrity? But why should this be necessary when you consider all the famous photographers who used a Leica in the past, or even the famous ones that use one know such as Ralph Gibson and William Eggleston to name just two contemporary photographers. Hey, the lenses are good and the M body feels "right" -- isn't that enough for you? Whenever I see one of these Leica sighting postings, my reaction always is, "who cares?" sl1
Mitch, how about giving everybody a break. it is saturday and so have it easy, don't be so harsh. might do you some good 2.
joseph_walsh2
"Who cares?" That would be those who click on "Leica Sightings-Movies" Those who don't, don't click. Works beautifully, don't you think? Robert Altman's "Ready To Wear" features a Leicaflex in the hotel lobby. Wielded by one of the "stars." steve_unsworth1
Mitch I've seen quite a number of photographers with Nikons or Canons and big lenses also carrying an M6, for close up work I guess.
albert knapp md
I was watching the movie Z by Costas-Gavras. This political thriller was made in the late 60's and is a legend. I noticed that the "reporter" used a Leicaflex (?SL) in two of the key scenes. Can anyone confirm this. If so, I would add it to Andrew Nemeth's movie list. albert knapp md
BTW, the reporter also had a motorized camera, perhaps a Nikon?

Not really: I just blundered by mistake, having wanted to click on the title below it. But once I read the thread I wanted to react to absurdity. This ain't harsh. chris_mearns
"...I just blundered by mistake, having wanted to click on the title below it..." Oooh Mitch! you fibber. Tell the truth. andrew n.bra hrefhttp
Here's the FAQ "Leica at the Movies" [link]
Most of the movies mentioned so far are already in the list. "The Quiet American" isn't yet, but I prefer to wait until someone else confirms the "sighting".
Nowhereman
>>ooh Mitch! you fibber. Tell the truth. Absolutely not. I was interested in the thread just below this one, "Very expensive M3". But to see that someone actually bothers to keep a list of Leica sightings at the movies I find risible.
joseph_walsh2
But then, so many find the use of "risible" laughable.

andrew n.bra hrefhttp
So Mouse-click-challenged-Alland, you don't like the movie list on the FAQ I maintain - who cares what you think?
May be time for you to concentrate more on learning how to use a mouse and how to navigate a www page. But then again, I guess you're all hyped up about starting big school next year...;?)
Nowhereman
Andrew: If you're so proud of your list, why are you so senstive that someone might thinks that it's absurd? Mike: "Risible" happened to be the right word for the occasion, particularly as we're writing to each other. I must say that I have never used it for conversation. Others: No, I clicked by mistake only once; subsequent clicks obbiously were intential as the thread got increasingly amusing.
travis1
There's an old Chinese saying: "Silence is Gold" or has everyone heard that? So you can think other peoples' threads are absurd and cannot allow others to think that YOU are?
kevin m.
Hey, if you want "risible," how about a forum dedicated to one particular brand of camera?! Now, THAT'S geeky! Or is it a little too ironic to mention it on the forum dedicated to that camera? (Where's Alanis Morisette when you need her?) Actually, what I find risible is gravity-defying silicone cartoon boobs, but you don't hear much complaining about that!
kevin m.
Travis, Abraham Lincoln had a pretty good quote about 'silence.' "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Nowhereman
Travis, Kevin: If "silence is golden", why do you post these repsonses? The sword cuteth both ways.
