That's why I asked...I'll see if I have a better representation, or better yet, rephotograph the tree in a more complete form.

Elm normally has a slightly pointed oval leaf. The bright leaves in the background look more like a sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) although I think that's normally found in the eastern US. There's are some maple varieties with leaves similar to your first shot.
