I used the 200-500 on a D500 many times for that purpose. Flight paths are steady and predictable and one can usually acquire focus quite early - so it's not actually that hard on the AF system. Panning steadily with the moving planes (especially prop planes when using a slow shutter speed) is key to getting sharp images.
