anand_n._vishwamitran
Im contemplating purchasing this lens for macro and medium telephoto use. Does anybody have any experiences with this lens to share? Specifically, can people comment on sharpness, color, contrast and bokeh? It's been 5 years or more since this lens was introduced - should I rather wait for a possible updated version of the lens? Thanks in advance - I couldnt find these questions answered in the archive. anand_n._vishwamitran
I did read the review on photo.net, but that just left me thirsting for more knowledge :)
fx
I've taken a few shots with the lens at the store. It's definately sharp and contrast is excellent. The only downside is the fact that it's very long, heavy, and slower than the 100mm F2.8 Macro USM, which I ended up buying. If you really need the extra working distance than you really don't have a choice. If not, I'd highly recommend the 100 Macro since it's just as sharp and handles much better. Even with the canon ring-lite on the 100 it's still comfortable when shooting all day.

steve_baggett
I've owned one of these lenses for 3 years. I use it exclusively for macro/closeups, and it is my favorite lens. It is an excellent lens, very sharp and contrasty. It even works well on AF if you are shooting regular "closeups". Of course, as you near 1:1 you should use MF in almost all cases. I sometimes use the 1.4x with it to get even more stand-off distance. The only downsides are (1) expensive and (2) heavy. Good luck.
macrophoto
Very good lens, the only downside: out of focus highlights turning octogonal very easily.
