mike_halliwell
I did some night-time shoots to try and see the current Comet (comet c/2022 e3 (ztf)) and thought I'd try Starlight View and Display Colours (to red). I found the online Tips and Tricks.... https://www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/five-z-9-features-that-aid-in-night-photography.html and found the Custom Settings 'letter+number' combo is different to my Z9. Specifically, Starlight View is d9 in the online menu view.. But d10 in my Z9. and all subsequent numbers are off by one. I've never noticed one of these change before (after a firmware upgrade??) It's going to annoy the **** out of the authors of Z9 books! **** insert word of choice...!
Rob Davies
a few of the menu items got pushed around after firmware 3.0, so I'm not surprised.

ShunCheung
There are certainly some changes to the menu and manual. E.g. 60fps JPEG was a new option that came with FW 3.0 (firmware). FW 2.0 also added a lot of options to the Z9.
mike_halliwell
I don't mind the new options, it's the fact that lots of Z9 manuals are now wrong.....😱
ShunCheung
I just checked Nikon's Z9 reference guide download. They are up to version 3 of the guide, but that was written for FW 2.10. It looks like the documentation is lacking behind.

Indeed! ...and all those printed manuals will need an erratum page. New items are fine, but why renumber stuff? That's so unhelpful! Have they actually renumbered things before?
ilkka_nissila
There must be a FW supplement to the manual that should be on the download page for all the various manuals?

But the nice people who write books on the Z9 are going to be annoyed... as are You-Tube Z9 video tutorial creators. Have they done it before? ShunCheung
This is Nikon's page for all new features introduced in FW 3.0 in late 2022: https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z9/en/18_added_functions_300_00.html
mike_halliwell
Back to the original question...😉 Have they CHANGED letter/number combos before?
ShunCheung
5 hours ago, mike_halliwell said: Back to the original question...😉 Have they CHANGED letter/number combos before? Yes, Nikon has changed things a bit. On the left side, it is the original reference guild from December 2021 when the Z9 was first shipped. The middle is version 3 of the guide, which is the latest one can download as of January 2023, corresponding to FW 2.10. Recall Nikon introduced JPEG pre-release in FW2.0 for 30 fps and 120 fps. They jammed that in as the new Custom Setting d4 and bumped everything down (number incremented by 1). And they also add d20 for faster EVF refresh rate. And then in FW 3.0, Nikon added 60 fps JPEG and that is also available for pre-release. Hence the name "C30/C120 Options" is changed to a more generic wording, not adding C60.
mike_halliwell
Ah, what I meant was has this happened with previous bodies?.....😉 I don't remember having to re-learn them or getting lost in the changed menus before with other DSLRs. ilkka_nissila
Since there is a description text next to each custom function, I never felt the need to memorize the codes for any of them. I look at the text and make adjustments accordingly.
ShunCheung
I see Nikon need to add new settings along with major firmware updates with new features, but I wish they would only append to the end of the lists. Moving numbers around adds confusion.
