gmahler5th
I am going to be shooting a wedding this summer, and I know that I need to buy a Nikon speedlight to go with my N80. I have done some comparison shopping, and I think the SB-28 looks like the flash for me. But then I noticed there is a newer (advanced?) SB-80, both new for under $300. So which flash is best? Is the SB-80 worth the extra dough?
ivan_verschoote1
Its worth considering the SB80dx because it matches both analog AND digital cameras.
craig_bridge
For single flash applications on a N80, there really isn't any difference between the SB-28, SB-28DX, and SB-80DX. For multi-flash the SB-80DX built in remote trigger is useful and for digitals the SB-28DX or SB-80DX are definitely what you want.
hal_bissinger
The SB-80DX is the newest addition to the Nikon flash lineup. It offers a few improvements and additions over the '28. There are a couple that should interest you like it has more power and has a much improved metal foot that isn't prone to breaking like the older versions. There is a new lever locking mechanism that replaces the old thumb wheel.<p> Yes, I think it's worth the extra money.
austin_calhoon
Speaking of the Metal foot on the SB 80, I have broken four, YES 4, hotshoes off the multiple SB28's. Doesn't seem like a big deal right? Well at $70 for each replacement it is. Spend the extra money now and get something that will last for a long time. Don't buy old technology if newer is close in price.
imageworkz
I have both flashes. I purchased my SB28 when I got a N80. It's a great flash. I then got a SB80DX when I moved to the D1H. It does have an awesome hotshoe. Makes mounting much easier. It also comes with Nikon's version of the Sto-Fen diffuser. I also think the display and control are easy to read. The SB80DX also has a modeling pre-flash.
